i don't read furry fanfiction, I read no/low shipping adventure shit ...but I can rarely read stuff written after 2014
I have to filter out more fanfictions than ever, because people are writing more weird coomer stuff than ever and not labeling it properly. I don't want to see ANY coomshit, but especially not the poly "character/character/character/character" cancer that is everywhere all the sudden.
Also no one serious feels like they have free time to "waste" on fanfiction anymore. They're probably right, I guess

Does reading books make you more intelligent or is reading books just a trait of intelligent people? Do audiobooks have the same effect? I have questions and I need answers.

Weak analogy: The brain is a muscle.
Reading is going to make parts stronger but it needs upkeep. For example, reading makes my internal dialogue clearer, helps me with focus, etc. I know a few people that have a lot of trouble with writing (failing out of college because they can't write a 5 page paper) and they don't read anything that is not on their phones...
While working out, audiobooks puts my in that same imaginary space (if that makes any sense) that reading fiction does... But I don't think it does anything for my grammar, etc.

I listen to podcasts while I lift but I find myself zoning in and out. Not sure I could follow along with an audiobook. I guess cardio would be different.

I drift too much on podcasts too... Audiobooks kind of force me to pay attention (and I use the skip back button a few times). It's great for long cardio! I usually don't have the energy to pick a new album after running for 40 minutes.

literature is just the art form where the artist has the most control over every aspect the medium. It's a consise summative work for important inter-generational knowlege.
Something like an audiobook is 90% of the way there (a bit lacking in 1st person perspective though) if its like a novel you read once, its just that there are things that are too important to convert into an audiobook.
Imagine something complex where you might need to read the same sentence over multiple times to understand it, like a textbook or a research paper. That wouldnt translate well to a podcast. to the extent that a creative work presents new complex ideas, it will translate poorly.

thoughbeitfully literature has a blind spot in that a lack of 'pretty pictures' results in a reduced control of qualia.
it's not a medium that offers full control- pessimism and delight cannot be controlled as effectively as, say, a comic，and mysticism can hardly be induced at all.
it's a highly efficient medium but still imperfect.
