I haven't even done the art for Big Marseyo. The Nintendo artists did a fantastic job of minimizing art data by reusing certain elements.

Big Mario takes up 8 sprites, and his jump/swim/fireball actions use a couple of the same sprite references, so it takes special attention to make sure that your art for a single common sprite matches with all three animations.

It could be easier than pixel editing NES ROMs, but I want to keep this as a functional NES ROM for any emulator anywhere.

Those ROM sprite files only use 4 colors, and unfortunately they do not correspond to what you visually see in the game. To achieve the visual effect, the vidya game has a further coding how to ascribe those sprite references to the colors which the player sees.

Fortunately Mario's 4 colors can be used for Marsey, and the goombas for Reddit Snoo, otherwise I would have had to learn how to edit the color reference table. It's doable, but I'd rather simply just change the art and use the existing colors for something that works, because you end up changing other elements which* pull from the color reference table.

I guess that's maybe not as wild as I make it sound, but also I am a product manager chad by trade so it's my job to over-inflate successful achievements in engineering so I can take credit for them in all my meetings with the businesscels.

Yep I'm a technical PM too, also mostly science and engineering. I'm not a codecel and don't know much for this one but it's pretty straightforward:

  • Pirate the rom

  • Watch a YouTube video

  • Download an application that extracts the BMP file that contains every single sprite

  • Find what you're looking for

  • Change the pixels in the tool

The trick is that little Mario comes in 4 sprites and big Mario comes in 8 sprites, and they are read left to right in 8x8 pixels. Every single sprite is the exact same 4 colors and additional coding in the game assigns the colors in the screen from another table, so the sprite BMP just looks like a mess all at once.

Little Mario and the goombas were hard enough, and I haven't even edited their death animations yet.

I just need to find time+motivation at the same time to get it done.

This is very impressive but I've always thought that changing sprites on the NES requires at least some sort of coding knowledge in NES' own assembler (6502 assembly ostensibly) sooooo I'm confused about how much effort this actually is. I have googled for a couple of seconds and there are some online CHR editors so maybe someone already did the (hard) work while you're now stuck with the tedious work of accurately altering old sprites and/or creating new sprites. Anyway, you're so cool and when I grow up I want to be like you... :daydream:
