Its pretty fitting that the Wii U servers are shutting down as this is mostly just slight alterations to the Donkey Kong Costume from Mario Maker 1 for Wii U. See in the 8-bit mario mode you could give mario costumes which were 8 bit sprites for many Nintendo (basically any character in Smash for Wii U plus more) and non Nintendo characters (like Baby Metal did a crossover).
