Approximately 1.1 million songs have been taken off YouTube by SESAC right now
— (@miiyauwu . bsky . social) (@PearlteaRizzy) September 28, 2024
For those who don't know, SESAC is the organization that deals with rights to play music on public spaces and businesses.
So far, this only affects Americans. pic.twitter.com/RPlGzU9C5m
i live less than an hour away from their HQ, luckily this doesn't affect most of what i listen to because otherwise i would drive over there and start fedposting

Licensing is so gay. They have started taking songs out of old video games for the same reason.
And in the case of some games which have both music and vehicle licensing, they straight up remove it from sale instead

Youtube is one of the best archives for music that cant be published elsewhere due to copyright or sampling issues

If you use youtube as your main source for music youre an r-slur anyways

What do you use? I want a free service, with a free app that lets me listen to literally anything I want and I don't want to host any of it

I pay $5/month for Spotify Premium Family plan but even using the free version the ads are less than youtube and might be always skippable but maybe thats just premium.
I havent looked at ad blockers that work on phones so idk if you can just block those out though.
For me its a better option than youtube even on the free version because it drains my battery less at work (cus i have an earbud in like 75% of the day) and i dont have to keep a video open for it. Yeah im pretty sure theres workarounds but it hasnt been worth it for me when spotify is less than I pay for a podcasts patreon
Also can import all your own music files so if theyre missing anything license wise you can fix that easily and they might not even play ads if youre playing your local files
Yeah im sure theres some super neurodivergent way to get it all on like VLC or some shit for free with no ads where it works better but A) you have to figure that out and B) it scares the hoes

host it locally
It's worth it
and just carry around a good high capacity usb stick that has "everything"
I thought the same as you, but then I lost too much irreplaceable music over the years...

Spotify is the one subscription worth paying for (however I do understand the frustration with not being able to watch music videos if you're into that kind of thing)

I went on rdrama.net hoping to show them that LGBT people aren't all the wholesome kinds of people they see them as. After months of reading their documentation based on actual digital footprints, I realize they are right about a huge number of them. It's very depressing.
