title, its one of my old ones from a shitty computer i ripped in half to take it. formatted to exfat so everything supports it, but what operating system do you recommend? usually just gonna use it for simple programming, file storage, and to access files i couldnt. im thinking windows and if i have enough space ill add linux because i dont wanna screw with wine to run exes. not sure though
codecel signal got a 1tb hdd connected to macshit (exfat drive), should i install windows or linux? or set up partitions with separate operating systems?

Assuming no compatibility issues I'd go with Windows 11. You can enable Windows Subsystem for Linux, which basically lets you seemlessly install Linux packages, use a bash terminal, and almost anything else you'd use Linux for.
But since you said you have a mac then you may want to stick with something like Debian, Ubuntu or Mint

What kind of "macshit"?
If it's a current M-series I wouldn't recommend running Linux yet and Windows is not supported at all.

ah shit it is shouldve never bought this darn thing. the keys are flimsy as frick when trying to remove them and clean underneath, shitty loading, and the thing is a heater at this point. probably gonna just keep this for another year or two before switching to something like a lenovo and just buy external hard drives for space as needed. rdrama is an official apple hate website

By all accounts if it's a M-series machine it should run macOS great and the MBAs are passively cooled. The M1 or M2 are my go-to recommendation laptop for most people.
I'm not sure why you'd buy an Apple device expecting to run Linux or Windows...
I would recommend building or buying a Synology-style NAS instead of buying a bunch of tiny (1TB) drives and swapping between them.

Can one even run a version of Windows worth using (Windows on ARM sucks) from a Mac worth using (pre-ARM Mac's suck)? Would stick to Linux if you have a recent Mac because the only benefit of Windows for people who aren't r-slurs or corporate IT is compatibility with all the games and other software that only support x86 Windows.
