!spacechads !historychads a fun fact. There's 16 people on orbit right now

9 astronauts on the ISS (SpaceX Crew-8, Soyuz MS-25 and Starliner CFT)

3 on the Tiangong Space Station (Shenzhou-18)

4 on Polaris Dawn

And tomorrow is the Launch of Soyuz MS-26, so the total will be up to 19 people in orbit, a historical record!

is that the most at any one time?

Yes. Previous record was 14 every time a Dragon does a rotation flight (since 2021 there are always 7 on the ISS and 3 on Tiangong, so the rotation launch brings up the total to 14 if a Dragon launches or 13 if a Soyuz or Shenzhou launches). Before the 2020s the record was 13, a rotation Soyuz flight to the Mir-Space station coinciding with a Shuttle mission with 7 on board.

Of course the "19 people in space" was achieved in 2021 due to a New Shepard launch (there were 3 on Tiangong, 10 on the ISS and 6 on board of New Shepard for a brief moment), but that's suborbital (like a minute being above the Karman Line). Hence I think 19 people on "orbit" is way cooler.

So the Soyuz ms-26 is going to explode on the pad

The Polaris Dawn crew will attempt the EVA from Dragon on Thursday, September 12 at 2:23 a.m. ET. If needed, a backup opportunity is available on Friday, September 13 at the same time.

A live webcast will begin about one hour prior to the beginning of the spacewalk, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX. You can also watch the webcast on the new X TV app.

!spacechads !ifrickinglovescience why do they have to do it so early! :marseycry: :marseyyawn:

@Aevann can this event be streamed on the main chat? I doubt I'll stay awake but still

this is so cool, I didnt know they are doing an EVA

It's the main reason this mission took so long. It was announced in early 2022 and it was supposed to have happened by late 2022 but developing the EVA suits was harder than expected (naturally as it is complicated to develop one from scratch).

It will also be the highest EVA ever at a 737 km altitude.

I like to believe this is why musk got into space. He made a bet once that he could kill another billionaire live on tv and he wouldn't even be charged or spend a single night in jail. Now the man who accepted the bet lives in terror that today could have been the day, could happen anytime in the next week.

No, that's in September 2025.

Artemis II, but it could br delayed further because of the heat shield issues with Artemis I

Aren't there a number of sls delays as well that could push the date back?

No, the SLS is on schedule now. It's the heat shield data from the Artemis I Orion which is bugging NASA.

The EUS (Exploration Upper Stage) for the SLS won't be used until Artemis IV and is currently under development and in time, if you couple that with other delays (HLS, Gateway) it should be ready when the time comes.
