In the hands of a lesser director, I would agree, but the way that Kunihiko Yuyama delicately and impactfully worked it into the episode was actually the high point of season one for me (maybe even of the whole series).
Bullshit, it set up his redemption arch over the show and how he learned to not r*pe. Pokémon wouldn't be where it is today with the thematic elements of overcoming your past no matter how bad and how we all deserve second chances
Personally I thought it was a little too graphic but it made me get really invested in the show
