Not all of them being of legal drinking age is part of it, but the other obvious component is that this metric is purely about total money spent. Young people are always going to spend less on alcohol than older people because young people are always going to be poorer than older people.
!boozers, when I was young, I drank whatever was cheapest. I'd get a handle of truly terrible whiskey for ~$8 and go to town on that bad boy. As I got older and richer, I started drinking better liquor. The rest of !genx did the same. !millenials too, presumably. So even though we all drink less than we did back in college, we spend a Heck of a lot more on it. And in a decade or two, the same thing will happen with !zoomers.
Nope, I'm still comparison shopping for whichever beer gets me the most alcohol per dollar. My grocery store recently started carrying 24oz Genesee Ice's for $1.13, so that's my current go to.
