Does the UN actually do anything useful at all these days? I thought they were practically toothless because the major opposing powers can veto anything they don't fancy.

like many othre international organizations, the UN helps "democratic" regimes to externalize blame whenever they want to do something that harms their subjects:

1. "don't worry, citizens, signing this international agreement is only symbolic, it's not like it's an actual law."

2. wait a couple years

3. "sorry citizens, our hands are tied by this international agreement that we've signed."

if media and government are sufficiently aligned (which is the case in most western "democracies") this is pretty effective.

It's funny how many liberals constantly point out how insane it is that Resolution 314433 promising free tampons, donuts, and foot rubs has been signed by every nation except for the United States. It's like the USA is the only adult country in the entire world when Germans are nodding approvingly that Niger has symbolically promised all of its citizens free chemotherapy when Nigereian's dream is to afford a camel one day.
