I read at one point that credit card companies segregate card holders into groups, and aim to make a profit on each groups. The people that use their card for groceries and pay it off in full at the end of the month and the people that put the down payment on a car with a credit card and pay the minimum payment every month are two entirely separate groups. Credit cards charge merchants a fee, so the two percent is them passing some of the fee back to you, not them giving you a portion of the profit they earned on another group. However, that 2% back is a tax on poors without credit cards, which will be an even larger group if trump follows through, so you're still in luck to screw over poors
