I think fascism is the end state of extreme hyper-nationalism: the will of the nation embodied in one dictatorial leader, all other people and concerns subjugated to his power. It's like a more modern incarnation of the absolute monarchy. L'État, c'est moi

Why wouldn't you just use the word "authoritarian" or "totalitarian"? What makes fascism

There's overlap for sure. Fascism is both authoritarian and totalitarian, but I think the distinctive thing about fascism is a focus on blood-nationalism and the single leader. Fascism casts the nation as a family by blood, and the leader as ruling patriarch.
By way of counterexample, Putin is a strong authoritarian leader, but Putin's Russia is still a multiethnic federation, and he doesn't rule entirely by fiat. He's supported by the Duma and various oligarchs. It's not a totalitarian state where everything is subject to the ruler and his party.

I think fascism requires a foundational myth of the nation and it's people, which means race isn't necessary for it to work.
See Mussolini: "Race! It is a feeling, not a reality: ninety-five percent, at least, is a feeling. Nothing will ever make me believe that biologically pure races can be shown to exist today. ... National pride has no need of the delirium of race."
Germans were pretty neurodivergent about race science but I think a multi-ethnic fascist state can easily exist as long as the national myth accounts for it.

You could be right. Falangism in Spain is kind of an interesting borderline case: They were considered fascist but then dissolved into Francoism and became something different. Their ideology was very focused around the idea of Spain as a Catholic nation, so not explicitly racial, but a religious identity opposed to the Muslims and Protestants.

Another example would be the Croatian Ustase who managed to come up with the idea that Bosnians were just Croatian Muslims (therefore more acceptable) while the Orthodox Serbs and Jews were the enemy.

I know fascists hate the commies, but you probably could make a case that Stalinism isn't a world away from fascism.
Maybe distinguishing factors are that the Soviet Union was at least nominally about the party and the brotherhood of all workers, not the greatness of one leader and one race.

Sweaty, fascism and communism are two sides of the same coin.
About one race you're right; however, with communists their race equivalent is being a proud belligerent party member. It's more inclusive (if you forsake all values for theirs), but it's still the same shit.
