I think the style of anime, with all the baggage it has, is antithetical to a good story. Never checked the "this proves anime is art!" shit like Berserk or Evangelion, never will. But if they are truly great stories, turn them into a regular novel or a live-action movie. Additional challenge: No panty shots allowed.

2D animation with higher attention to detail than standard western animation is antithetical to good story

turn something into a novel or live action movie

Novels are boring as shit, dont sell, and have a hard time conveying visuals while keeping pace. Its a medium that only engages one of your senses. Theres only so much information you can efficiently convey via text.

Also good luck trying to translate something like Ghost in the Shell or some Miyazaki joint into live action with a visual style that doesnt completely clash with the narrative or butt r*pe the budget.

uh noo the jiggling anime boobies are essential to the story you cant take them out!

Only proves what I already thought about anime.

Was referring to translating something like this without turning it into a gay 80s practical fx movie or dogshit modern CGI fest

I fell asleep during the middle of this film. It was pretty, but I can’t even remember what it was about.

I just don’t find any anime has created any kind of transcendental experience for me, ever. It’s ok entertainment if you’re into it, but I can say certain books and films have cracked open my skull and changed the way I see things for eternity. That’s the definition of art for me. The rest of it is entertainment, which while it shouldn’t be frowned upon, just seems like the category all anime falls into.

Anime at its core is just film. Its dogshit, but there are some legit exceptions. Like jin-roh or perfect blue. Theres been a few times where its hit me in ways normal films have. The thing is, the good ones do prioritize telling the story via visuals. Youre not gonna get an anime for 12 angry men because it wouldnt be justified. The goal is usually emotion, not logic.

Oh, yeah, I know what you mean. Films and I’ve found mindblowing don’t adhere to a story narrative at all. Most movies still do—even after a hundred or so years of existence the vast majority still feel like stage plays with a lot of money poured into them.

That's not a bad definition of art, but by that criteria few books, movies or games I've seen are art. :marseythinkorino:

Way to out yourself as a mouth breathing pseud redditor, lmao. Writing is almost never used to its full potential and isnt even remotely exact in communicating ideas (two people will have vastly different opinions as to whats going on in any given scene due to a lack of visual/auditory information).

Ive been writing for several years, and probably will be until i die, and im telling you right now it is the most overrated traditional art form next to music. Only in extremely rare occasions is it worth spending days reading a given novel when many other mediums can accomplish the same goals in a fraction of the time.

Most r-slurred opinion I've ever seen on rdrama, no surprise this sperg is an anime watcher. There have been far more great novels than there have been movies and comic books created. There's never been a truly great work of animation anyways, it's a testament to the genre that subhumans think Evangelion's psych 101 level of depth is groundbreaking.

Outside of art, yes- but what Neuromancer takes 10 pages to do, Blade Runner can do in 15 seconds. Film can show you a hundred things in a single frame, whereas writing is constrained to being processed sentence-by-sentence. Its completely linear unless youre a House of Leaves spastic. The only thing film actually struggles with is internal monologue.

Your brain just doesn't work in a way that enjoys books :marseyshrug:

I wonder how fast your reading speed is, or if you feel some sort of mental strain upon the act of reading. I just kind of effortlessly glide through a page, don't really process where sentences begin or end unless I pull myself "out of it" and pay specific attention to grammar and syntax.

Things are just kind of beamed to my minds eye when I read.

Meanwhile, I seem to enjoy TV and movies much less than the average person.

But that's what makes writing interesting. It's a joint creation of the reader and the writer. It's experienced actively rather than passively, it requires mental effort and attention (this is why audiobooks are fake). Everyone will see and interpret things differently. The novel handles subtext, subjectivity, etc. better than any other medium.

Many "writers" who get their inspiration from movies, shows, anime, games etc. will fail because their interests are in things books don't do well. They end up writing because they don't have the budget/skill to work in another medium. A good creator understands the advantages and disadvantages of each medium, and works accordingly.

Short stories are great. I love em. Im actually eternally pissed theyre not more popular over the 3 million word gigafantasy epics because theyre usually way more impactful.

Regrettably theyve died and been resurrected in the form of r-slurred creepypastas and other wattpad style bullshit because theyre not marketable in the traditional sense, even in the form of compilations.

If you're actually interested, it's my favorite sorta writing. Literary journals are slacking these days but river crossing by Jack Irvings is my favorite in the past few years. And I'm not too hurt about starving out the artists. That's usually when the best of them come out.

My fellow SIPoC Z-slur in Celestia, novels engage your whole brain by forcing it to play pretend on all five of your senses at once. Or at least they would if I knew how to read.

Animation allows the merging of real and fantastical visual elements in a way that would be impossible in live action (would look ultra tacky), yet keeps the video format unlike a book.

Never checked the "this proves anime is art!" shit like Berserk or Evangelion, never will.

So if people offer counter examples and you refuse to acknowledge them, then your opinion doesn't matter. It's literally just a visual medium.

Comparing Grave of the Fireflies or Perfect Blue to shit like Sword Art Online, is like comparing Se7en to iCarly.
