How many pager manufacturers are even there? My guess is that the Israelis made custom batteries with explosives inside and and as such couldn't be detected by just opening the devices and looking at them. I think even overheating the batteries couldn't make em blow like that

That would be my guess. Destructive cyberattacks aren't new (see Stuxnet) but they are pretty rare. Maybe there was a way to trigger all of the batteries in these pagers to short out and explode around the same time. The alternative is that Israel somehow previously managed to get faulty/booby-trapped devices into the hands of Hezbollah members and are only now detonating them remotely.
