Israel injures hundreds of Hezbollah operatives by hacking their pagers and making them explode. Most likely, they made the lithium batteries overheat.
There are many videos and pictures of the attack circulating online.

How many pager manufacturers are even there? My guess is that the Israelis made custom batteries with explosives inside and and as such couldn't be detected by just opening the devices and looking at them. I think even overheating the batteries couldn't make em blow like that

Most pagers use basic off-the-self batteries

The nyt is saying these had bombs installed in them by Mossad. I guess Hezbollah didn't even bother tearing the fricks down before using them.

That would be my guess. Destructive cyberattacks aren't new (see Stuxnet) but they are pretty rare. Maybe there was a way to trigger all of the batteries in these pagers to short out and explode around the same time. The alternative is that Israel somehow previously managed to get faulty/booby-trapped devices into the hands of Hezbollah members and are only now detonating them remotely.

Yeah I would have to wonder about them being booby trapped, I've used a regular pager before and it had like 2 AAs in it which I wouldn't think would be enough to cause that big of a bang but maybe I'm wrong.

No idea. If people are still making pagers today then they may have opted for lithium-ion batteries which are way more explody

Obvious answer if they have infiltrated the supply chain and started supplying them with cheap electronics, wait until enough have been handed out then set off the fireworks embedded in them
