Yes to the first question and not really to the second. The Taliban just had to wait it out since most Americans barely even know why their military is in Afghanistan apart from some vague notions of terrorism which hasn't been an issue stateside in years.
Israel is literally on Gaza's doorstep and generally has sought a final solution to Palestine that didn't involve the creation of a separate state. I still think Israel will lose because the Gaza populace has no goals except the destruction of Israel.
