American Singapore(s): Competent city governance hiding in plain sight

https://www.population.fyi/p/american-singapores-effective-city

no mention on singapore's draconian drug laws, a compliant population and highly-remunerated (and therefore highly competent) politicians? :marseyhmm: :marseyhmmm:

@TracingWoodgrains

also obligatory “disneyland with the death penalty”:

>Singapore is the most boring, sterile place I've ever been. I'd take Tokyo, Taipei, or Hong Kong over it in a heartbeat. The entire country reminds me of a mall. William Gibson's 1993 Wired article "Disneyland with the Death Penalty" (https://www.wired.com/1993/04/gibson-2/) is still as relevant as ever.

I saw a fascinating talk that convincingly argued that the Chinese Communist Party has taken its game plan over the last 30 years from Singapore, a de facto one party state led by the People's Action Party. It's interesting to note that this party was founded on socialist principles but is now firmly capitalist.

singapore's draconian drug law

skill issue

skill issue too lol, really makes one wonder where that cute twink went over here

Singapore cannot be a benchmark for a city in the US. The tradeoffs are not worth it.

noooooo it's so tough being able to walk the streets at 3am without the fear of being stabbed by homeless junkies nooooooo muh freedumbbb

Should Singapore really be put on a pedestal? They have inhumane laws and violate human rights regularly. Even free speech doesn't truly exist there - some topics like criticizing religions are off limits. Competency in some areas through authoritarianism isn't a sign of competency in general.

I would consider Singapore a livable place if it was bigger. The only thing that makes Singapore a nightmare, at least to me, is the government mandated housing and accomodating 2-4 people in a 200 sq ft concrete box.

Now I feel dumb for not staying close with a girl in my dorm during Stanford high school summer college. Her parents (if I'm remembering correctly) had had her going to a boarding school in Singapore, and that summer at Stanford was a rare taste of the West for her. She said that she planned to stay long-term but unfortunately I have no contact info :marseycry:

I remember her father would hire her limos or town cars at any time (this was back in 2011, before anything but cabs or such were entirely standard) to drive her on shopping benders around Palo Alto. I remember my one, paltry trip to trader joes with my roommate and neighbor was my "splurge" of the summer :marseypoor: sucks to be poor. Thanks, King Newsom

Very far from it, from what I saw when the dad showed up to move her out after finals week. He openly called the guy names and the RA had to come supervise our floor because of the noise. The "couple" themselves didn't seem to care deeply for one or another, either. It was openly known as just a casual fling gone awry :taychefkiss:

Gibson was a burned out old hippie who repackaged ideas that were common in the 1970s so that effete hipsters and drug users could feel like they understood. It's not surprising that when he's staring the future in the face in Singapore he doesn't get it. He never was a visionary, just a guy who tried to understand the internet in terms of his aging boomer hippie mentality.

It's strange how Singapore doesn't nearly have as many state-owned enterprises or nearly as many tendrils in its own financial sector. :marseyhmm:
