S*x sells. However if you wish to keep it clean the holes idea is good for different interests. I am also pretty sure the website has been consistently growing.

I almost made a whole topic that was Real and Coherent about whether or not holes were a good idea, it felt like a different topic than this one but maybe it wasn't.

/h/s*x when

probably never, it's a website of dramanauts, the autists among autists. 2 minutes after /h/s*x is made it will be flooded with loli porn, and that's if we are seeing the userbase displaying self restraint.

my favorite reddit trivia is that the author of the critical code jQuery was the original top moderator for /r/s*x

I'm not so sure

what made reddit work was that there was this blurring of professional and personal that made /r/s*x a place for talking about s*x as adults, so

you might be right that if you tell the story of the dramanautism there will be more dramanautism, but

story-telling is sorcery, so

the story you tell can blind you to the options available if you simply told a different story (within reason)

I'm not saying that /h/s*x is a good idea or that it could have qualities desirable or undesirable.

I am saying that holes/subreddits provide a sense of place, that is their function, a place has formal and informal rules as to what things belong in that place (see /h/slackernews, the hole model working well)

all of the discussion of how the frontpage should look is a distraction in the sense that the people who want holes, who desire holes, who want to have holes so they can fill them with objects: that is a desire for the sense of place. @carpathianflorist

The frontpage problem is a hard one to solve because remember there were big shifts in reddit's frontpage: which subreddits were default frontpaged. old.reddit.com/r/all is not actually the typical viewing experience. we don't want to fracture the narrative of r drama by having remarkably different frontpages. these problems can be solved.

but the desire for the sense of place will not be filled if we remove all holes altogether, thus the results of the vote called by Aevann the Even-Handed earlier today.

I didn't write a post about holes because I don't have a recommendation, ultimately. I'm still thinking about the problem. But I do know that what we want is:

  • A cohesive frontpage experience.

  • A deeper sense of 'place' with different senses of 'time.' (Low activity holes are not inherently a bad thing. The accumulations of weeks are gentle and brilliant.)

  • Hole discoverability: in the old days of Reddit psychogeography was defined through a labyrinth of users and subreddits. If you ran across someone whose writing you liked you saw what other subreddits they frequented.

It's not a bad thing if users have to explore a labyrinth. Making the labyrinth such that you can't hide fedposting/pedposting somewhere from the mods is the hard part.

Just because some users complain about complexity doesn't mean that the data of their dissatisfaction is important.

I understood 60% of that.

well which 40% do you want me to expand on lmao

this, btw, is why I didn't write the post on the holes. I've tracked some 'lines of flight' but not their final direction in a more decided solution.

let me add some:

There is temporality to an internet forum, in the sense that not everything is really designed for the 'main stage.' Sideshows are where the real underground lives. (Reddit still has an underground, and undergrounds are always fascinating.) (Arguably this is Free Reddit if you take Reddit to point to the immanence of the medium-form writing forum for a culture instead of the name of a website which was the first real immanence in our timeline: though Digg before Reddit was a threaded forum, the people who assimilated from Digg took on Reddit's customs IMO. Or if Digg did it first Reddit did it better. Point is anyway it doesn't matter what you call it because it can move.)

Anyway I want to pull @Aevann in because I got some questions to whisper to him in the sidelines if you can, in fact, answer them.

  • How determined are you to consume Reddit whole?

  • How far are you willing to change RDrama's culture in order to make that happen? 0%? Great. 100%? Lmao impossible.

We've more or less lopped off the 'racist' part. That's good. We're nibbling at some of the trainspotting, which is good.

But every nibble we make pulls us closer to the mainstream == less cool!

It's a conundrum.

The way to pull vast amounts of Old Reddit -- remember, new reddit outnumbers old reddit at this point -- is to seek, by attempting to create, the moderate politic. This is radical centrism. To define a new center.

Once an emigre is underway, if it happens, that, the definition of a new center, is what it would do necessarily. you see?

I unironically think ads would be a funny idea, but they have to be submitted by users as photos with a link destination and nothing more.
