Big Yud and friends think that AI is going to achieve sentience and kill us all. I don't think that this is consistent with a basic understanding of how neural networks work, but whatever.
The AI Ethics movement has a better understanding of the limitations of machine learning, and are mostly just sneeding over the tendency of ungimped AI to chud out and/or nootice. They say that they want AI to be unbiased, but really they just want it to have an extreme leftoid bias.

They don't think the current stuff will. They think that AI progress will be exponential so we will unknowingly stumble upon an AGI that will catch us by surprise and frick everything up before we even realize it. Their "work" usually relies on a bunch of handwaving, which is why I can't stand it.
What's ironic is they could just point out that any existing biases in the data will be reflected in the AI. However, progressive hubris is so immense these days that they refuse to even leave any room for people to acknowledge inconvenient facts like black people disproportionately committing crime.
