We never should have let them have independence after WW2. It was terrible for them in the long run.

Does EU constitution not have free speech as a fundamental right? Actually can EU judiciary overrule the Parliament? If they don't even have that basic level of checks and balances how do they demand all those constitutional practices from aspirant members? :marseythinkorino: Are national courts subordinate to EU Parliament too? I think some E Euro court found some EU directive in violation of national constitution, didn't it?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

There isn't a 'EU constitution'. Remember, EU is a """trade""" union at heart. Individual countries may have have constitutions with freedom of expression written into it, mine does for example. But here you have small problem: EU laws trump country laws. It's by design because otherwise no constituent state would be under any obligation to follow the EU laws which defeats the point. So if the law of my country says you can do x, and people did x for years without any problems, but then bureaucrats in Brussels decide that x is actually a bad thing and pass it as an EU law/regulation in parliament, then it automaticaly becomes unlawful in all constituent states regardless of what the local law says.

Then there of course are nuances like the fact that at least where I'm from the national law is enforced much stronger than EU laws, but this is getting into small details and ultimately is irrelevant

>then it automatically becomes unlawful in all constituent states regardless of what the local law says.

And what happens if that country tells Brussels to pound sand? The EU doesn't have a military they could leverage to make them obey.

Don't quote me on this, I'm not a lawcel, but I think the extent of what a country can do legally is to have their representatives vote against, and if it really violates some fundamental law like constitution, then they could object in some european court.

And what happens if that country tells Brussels to pound sand?

Well Poland and Hungary have been doing that for a while, so evidently nothing. You get a stern talking to and your access to EU gibs gets limited, but I think that's it mostly

I have to use a European-made piece of technology for one of my research projects. It is the most goddarn worthless piece of shit I've ever encountered in my field of study. That device single handedly convinced me that Europe is a black hole of innovation and the only way for a European to become a good engineer is to go to Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, or the USA.
