It'd be more of a shock if a train wasn't involved in delusional linuxposting.

but I can’t help thinking about the older generation PC in my hackerspace running Arch that Just Works

I use arch too but lol it's absolutely not a 'just works' OS.

After 100x of these moments I learned you have to design your laptop/PC hardware around using Linux. People use shitty wifi/bluetooth cards with barely any Linux support and get mad when it breaks. I started looking at lists of A+ supported Wifi / GPUs / etc and never had a problem after that. Or just buy a laptop a ton of people uses Linux on already, like one of the mainline Thinkpads or Dell XPS.

Or just buy a macbook and use MacOS

I'll be honest, I decided to start using Linux on a whim when my parents gifted me a laptop.

It's an MSI laptop. :marseyclueless:

I'm so fricking r-slurred.

linuxchads don't leave their room and thus don't need to worry about things like wifi

Arch is like all software, it breaks when you frick with it or change things unconservatively. The problem with Arch is that it's like handing candy store to children, its so flexible and wide open that people just constantly tweak it obsessively then wonder why it doesn't work half the time.

I learned that lesson the first year using Arch where it broke constantly, then I started learn it (and Linux proper the way I never did in Debian) and never had problems for ~3 years after. I got to a point where it was perfect and decided not to frick with it. The closest I've ever gotten to MacOS quality/stability.

I use a Macbook again now cuz my boss buys them for me, but I'd still be using Arch otherwise.

yeah this is the issue, arch attracts people who don't really know what they're doing but want to be 1337 haxors, who break everything and then make memes about how hard arch is. Manjaro is even worse. Debian unstable has the same "bleeding-edge" packages arch does, but you don't hear people talking about how much it breaks all over the internet.

Why does she exist

If I learned anything about getting into infosec when I was younger is that 90% of 'hackers' often suck at computers compared to programmers, they are just really good at reading other people's guides on breaking them.

why are so many ubuntu/pop!/mint users afraid of the CLI?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

the important answer (which doesn't answer your question) is that users shouldn't have to use the CLI if we're ever going to get non-tech people to use Linux PCs

you're right, but to add to this: consumer distros should encourage end users to learn the CLI while making it as easy as possible and also not necessary to do so. Ideally I think ubuntu/mint/etc. should introduce a terminal emulator that has built-in documentation for common commands and autofills commands similar to how modern smartphones can autofill prose
