God I hate Reddit, but if we have any jannies on that powerjanny call tomorrow, maybe bring this up!
No severance lmao
They had layoffs in January. Wish I had known so I could gloat about that one too.
Left Twitter bcuz of mean ol' Musk just to get the wingcuck layoff with no severance.
Booohooo muh third-party app devs have to pay now booohooo

I honestly don't know how they are that many people working for reddit. The company never do anything except hiring pedos, or putting out a bugged new feature and immediatly forgetting about it every 2 years.

There was a fun drama when a guy was hired by one of the reddit founders directly or something, then spent literally a year reimplementing the bitcoin client reference implementation in javascript, then started making noises about redditcoin supported by his (still incomplete) stuff, at which point people started laughing at it and someone more reasonable promptly fired him because we've spent a year of SF programmer salary on the guy doing what?

Its rework. Becouse its so shit and lot of people hate it and dont want it. They have too keep both rework and old running. They are operating two sites at price of one.
And rework has lot of features that must take shitload of work. Like chat. It has been there since start of rework or even ealier. But up until recently it didnt work. They have reworked it multiple time. Late last year you could still pretty easily break it.
Month ago @Jalapt tried it out and it seemed too be finally working fine. @Jalapt think that patch happened in april. Chat came 2017? It took them 6 years too make it functional.
Question is. Who uses it? Only people @Jalapt have seen using it are bots and perverts (like me)
Six years and god knows how many man hours. For that. Cherry on top. Its on both old and rework. More work hours wasted

Apparently only like 2% of reddit users are on the old version. The redesign is geared towards (to the company, much more valuable) newer, more passive users who want to view videos and images and don't care much about comments. Its implementation is garbage imo but the company had to redesign the platform to even hope to one day turn a profit.
These features are basically the company's attempt to increase their most important metrics like engagement and daily active users, with the ultimate goal of increasing ad impressions/clicks. Whether those features are implemented well and they're successful or not are different questions, but they're investing in those to achieve business goals
Jump in the discussion.

So? Question was why there is so many people working in reddit.
I answered.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
yeah but what I'm saying is that the work is a necessary though questionably implemented effort to make the company profitable. I'm sure reddit has many employees they don't need, but the reason that companies don't just run platforms in maintenance mode is because they need people to figure out new ways to generate revenue, keep up with competitors so that users don't stop using the platform, etc. Old reddit is shit at serving ads and its userbase is extremely unprofitable so the company needed employees to build something that serves ads better and draws in people who are more likely to click them. They also have a few teams dedicated to exploring additional revenue streams like reddit gold/premium, that marketplace thing , NFTs, etc. It all serves the ultimate goal of making money, which is why every website gets shittier over time

True, but never underestimate what people will put up with to coom or to soy. What will kill reddit, if anything, is when cooming is banned. Critical mass of non-/pol/ users leaving will create a viable alternative that can branch out, like 4chan was to anime coomers from Something Awful (forum run by a guy named Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka who charged 10 bucks per signup or unban, popular in the 2000s) and later branched out into becoming the cesspool we all know today.

Yup. Investors tend not to like that - worries about bad PR, prostitution legality (many countries that "legalized" it only legalized it for the foid - the moid is still held as a criminal, and in the US it's only legal in certain rural Nevada counties) and boomer high-inhibition, high-success (= had a wife and/or hoes, is trad, or is prudish) sensibilities means that this stuff tends to be ditched.

I mean I worked at start-up companies with fake business models and we did nothing except try to get more venture capital funding. I think people weren't doing anything. Little different from these actually successful companies but the whole start-up culture is rooms full of fraud.
Jump in the discussion.

Even if it's not the company defrauding investors there's a lot of scammers looking to get hired at legitimate startups so they can get their fraud on. They usually get away scot-free too since the victims are usually too embarrassed to admit they got scammed. I worked at a place that hired a scam artist CTO who was able to run up 6 figures on a company card and sold the company a /16 that he didn't actually own.
Jump in the discussion.

That's funny. I had a client for a short time that was extremely smug and said he was a rent-a-CTO but he asked me the oddest questions about encryption like he was trying to show me he was smart but the questions were so dumb. Like asking if if I had coded encryption algorithms, which as I'm sure you know is not something a rando coder would do. I think he was trying to look smug with me but he sounded like a moron. The entire month I worked with him, he just flew from town to town and went to conferences and I still wonder wtf he did for these companies he claimed to work for.

He said everything they wanted to hear and his employment history looked legit, at least until after the fact when a lawyer got a bunch of his previous employers to admit in confidence that he scammed them too. The only reason he even got caught was because he couldn't deliver that block of IP addresses and finally ran out of excuses. They didn't even find out about the credit card shit until after he was gone. Groomercord servers are full of techcels that post to groomercord on the clock all day
I'm in trans groomercord servers (I might write a book about it) and a bunch of the mods and leaders are academics or codecels that rubber stamp stuff and reply to a dozen small emails every day. A dozen emails isn't much for 8 hours. They act like hot shit for doing it though.
I've noticed a lot of them in "compliance" type IT jobs where the whole job is to screenshot code with "this is the code we changed it because X and Y reasons using [method] and it was submitted by [developer] at [current time] and tested by [me]"
But they talk big about thier software job finnbard style like "Let me educate you on the traveling salsemen problem like I'm a professor or respected science youtuber (when really my job is primarily to edit JSON files for some rslurred reason), you see--"
"and in conclusion, I am an elite philosopher of our age and am a very smart, but also deeply empathetic woman"
"--hold up, my coworker needs me to approve some tickets and put an excel table in an email (did I mention I have a tech job???) I'll see u guys in 20 minutes bc I might have to make a phone call!"
also If u went on CS career reddits and stuff 2 years ago so many people were bragging they do NOTHING and get paid

I'm at a computer touching job and got promoted from actual coding to management/lead stuff and it honestly gives me anxiety that I don't seem to be expected to do anything anymore except attend meetings that have no purpose. I got temporarily handed a management position for a year (guy they originally hired for it was new and got let go for some unknown reason) with no pay raise and it was the most boring shit. We were just sitting there talking about doing things instead of actually doing things. I got so bored, I was ecstatic when they finally hired someone to fill the position.

Codecels log in to work and 'refactor' or 'hunt down a bug' all day. There's no standard measurement of how productive they are, and other codecels agree that the problems are hard to solve so managers don't question them.
The only way to out the bad ones are to hire a much better one and compare their output against each other.
