I have $11k to play with - most of which will end up going towards car expenses. I have to spend like $3000 of it before the end of the year for reasons I won't elaborate on. So it's this, or putting money into the Porsche, and I can't use the Porsche during the winter so it would lack the gratification I'm seeking to do so.

I used to be a professional photographer (www.bradgillette.net) and during the process became really good at Photoshop.

Then I stopped working, my computer got old (2013 i7 iMac), and I couldn't edit in Photoshop anymore because my computer was too slow. I don't know if I'm going to be able to become a professional photographer again, or if it's just going to be a hobby, but I'm worried I've lost a lot of my skills from lack of use. I feel like having a new, more powerful computer will inspire me to get back into it. In the meantime I've gotten really good at nailing shots in-camera and doing very minor editing, basically limited to what I could do in a physical color darkroom. That said, my images could always be improved with Photoshop.

I bought my current computer, a 2020 M1 MacBook Air, a couple years ago to do normal computer things and minor editing with my old camera (Canon 5D mkII) but now I have a new camera (Canon 5R) that produces much larger file sizes and it's too slow to run Photoshop to any useful extent and using Lightroom is painful.

I also want to get back into video production.

Should I dump $3500 into a laptop that could do everything I could ask of it, even though I don't have the income stream to support it at the time, and use it for practice? Or should I look at cheaper options like around $2500. I feel like if I don't spend the extra $1000 it'll come to bite me in the butt in the future.

This post is brought to you by weed, adderall, and lack of sleep thinking about this darn computer.

What is it about Apple that makes chuds seethe so much? Is it envy?

To add more salt in the wounds of these chuds… did Apple just BTFO all the chud's iToddler bullshit?

>Dismantles arguments about how Macs are useless because "MUH VIDYA"

>Dismantles arguments that iPhones are walled gardens as many methods of sideloading existing

>Explains how ARM architecture allows Macs to perform better than competing Windows devices while using less power

>Explains the entire history of Apple devices BTFOing the competition

>Explains how repairability is the fools strawman issue

How do (You) refute all these arguments? They literally actually have the brain to back their arguments up instead of the chud "iTODDLER" + red hair tranime pics.

>inb4 sage

>inb4 DURRRRRR ITODDLER

Neighbor spending upwards of 2k on a laptop that doesn't even have a top of the line GPU is absurd. I was looking at Macbooks for a replacement laptop but was put off by the prices. Apple's premium is offensive to good sense.

Why even bother getting a laptop with a top of the line GPU? You pay a premium compared to the equivalent desktop parts, you get no battery life because dedicated laptop GPUs drain energy, and it's a heavy brick that removes the portability advantage that laptops are supposed to have. Not to mention laptops degrade much more quickly than desktops.

The only "gaming" laptops worth getting are those with the souped up iGPUs which can play most games on the market at low/med settings.

I understand that. My point is that at that price if you aren't paying for something like high end GPUs there's no way the dollar/performance ratio is going to be worth it no matter how well made the hardware could be.

I don't know; My M1 Pro MacBook performs on par with or even better than my Intel desktop PC with an i5 12th gen for everything that I do.

There's not many tasks that you do on a computer that involves the GPU.

The only time the GPU matters is if you're playing video games, but these laptops are for doing work on not playing games.

The new Macs are fricking incredible. Could you get a cheaper non-portable Mac or do you need to be able to work on the road?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Please elaborate. All I've heard about new Macbook pros is they have many comparably worse specs at their price point than the older pros. I've been waiting to upgrade from my 2015 pro because of all that. Mine has been basically indestructible and still runs great with all its existing software, but I can tell it's starting to reach the end of its life.

You've got me wondering if the bad press I saw was maybe two models ago rather than the most recent

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I use Linux on a chinkshit laptop and I completely acknowledge that Apple silicon Macbooks and Minis are fantastic machines. Even an M1 model with 16 gb of memory is worth getting. They're expensive but well-reputed for their build quality and battery life, even the Intel ones stand the test of time. Apart from some Thinkpads and Elitebooks most laptops degrade in quality fairly quickly since their battery gets btfo and the internals get cooked from the heat.

The main complaint against Apple was that their bottom spec Macbooks had only 8gb of memory, which Apple tried defending by saying that their 8gb goes further than Windows. It was bullshit, but thankfully the base spec Macbooks now come with 16gb by default.

Not sure I've seen any bad press on the M series, they're amazing machines.

Jump in the discussion.

I'd also have to buy a nice monitor, it would be nice to be able to work on the road, have something to show stuff to clients instantly with (pending actual clients), and the Mac Mini isn't available with the M4 Max chip, which I feel like is important to future-proofing.

Jump in the discussion.

I have $11k to play with

What does this mean? If you have lots of money and $11k is just your throwaway money budget then sure. I upgraded to an M3 macbook pro recently and it's really nice. MacOS does everything that Linux is good for if you don't care about the neurodivergent parts. Nice build quality, silent, and the battery lasts forever. I recommend it or maybe a cheaper model if you don't need an M4. I don't know anything about video production or what the requirements are though

Don't listen to moneylet windowscels who think dealing with a shit OS every single day for years is worth saving $1k.

I feel like having a new, more powerful computer will inspire me to get back into it.

Stop lying to yourself you know this isn't true.

Jump in the discussion.

I have the one that's one step down from this ($2500 and has slightly less RAM) and it's a ridiculously good laptop.

You probably don't need to spend the extra thousand bucks on it unless you're doing something memory intensive (video editing maybe?) but they've got the memory integrated into the processor now, so forget about upgrading it ever. If you think you're going to need it, you better get it up front.

Jump in the discussion.

If you don't need an m4 the older models are way cheaper and still fast as frick. Definitely get the 14 inch pro though.

A few years ago a Surface Book with Windows 10 Pro was a viable alternative for a high end work laptop for developers or creatives.

However, Microsoft have shit the bed completely in terms of hardware and software since. What have they got that competes with current Apple hardware? Nothing.

And there's nothing in Windows 11 or even latest Windows 10 that makes it a good OS for productivity anymore.

Jump in the discussion.

I got the Surface Book when it came out. I absolutely love that device. It had a few issues but I overlooked them because Surface was a new line.

I used that SB up until a month ago but had to retire it in favour of a FW13. The Surface line now is just overpriced slop with "AI accelerators" and anaemic ARM processors which are suitable for my workload.

I got the baby version of this for my new job recently.

I hate Mac OS, I hate their interface. It pisses me off to no end. Fortunately my new job is mostly done via web browser so I can live with it.

If you're set on one of these I will add some caveats that might push you to a cheaper model. The thing is fricking tiny and my fat man hands are not suitable for its micro keyboard so you'll probably need some peripherals. It only has USB c input ports so you'll need a Dock, a keyboard and a mouse because trackpads are useless garbage. The 14 inch display is TINY so the fancy nano texture shit is almost meaningless. You'd be better off getting a decent monitor to use with it.

None of those things I listed are particularly expensive except maybe the monitor but think about that when making the purchase. Tiny laptops have drawbacks to them.

Hope that helps fam

If you're buying a m MacBook just make sure you get the most expensive processor/ram combo cause if you get less than that they basically neuter the chip architecture and you don't get as many lanes or some shit. I don't know how expensive your spec is, but the tier where you get the most bang for your buck is actually the highest tier on these.
