Which one?

For photo editing and video. No major 3D rendering.

Video editing? Bigger screen, always.

It's not like your render time will be that much different -- between thermal throttling and the limits of multithreading, you're rarely going to actually see a difference from 32 vs 20 gpu cores.

Dunno why people love using laptops for such a processor-intensive activity. God forbid anybody use a desktop with a heatsink bigger than a credit card.

I'm taking a break from writing the script for my next video. I didn't record enough footage for context and it's too late now.

Do you export loads of videos, to the point the saved times makes you a lot more money? If yes, there might be a case for the Max, if not then just get the 16 inch Pro, or buy an older model not from Apple like @goderator200 suggested.

Your playback/timeline performance should be identical (unless you use a ton of GPU accelerated effects), don't think LR/PS will differ much either. The bigger screen and battery if needed, also the RAM would matter much more to me for this use.

the more expensive one since you're going to be stuck with it for a decade or whatever you said. also working on a 14" screen sucks

To have the same specs as the 14 in the 16's size it would be $3650, which is way too much. I originally felt like I could justify spending $2500 on a computer so I'm stretching pretty far as it is.

If you have the cash burning a hole in your wallet, then get all girthy 16 inches of that MacBook

Even at the loss of the better processor? To spec the 16 out performance wise like the 14 it would be $3650, which is way too much to spend on a laptop. I went into this originally wanting to spend $2500.

You could buy a better windows laptop that's 2 years old and then get an M4 clone with the leftover money.

Sorry, I glanced and assumed the 16 was better all round.

Portability? Will the 16 be too big to lug around? Will 14 be too small? If the 14 is too small for video editing, would you be fine hooking up to an external monitor?

The 14 has more GPU cores and but I'm not sure if the performance-to-efficiency CPU core proportion is different to the M4 Pro. The 14 does have less RAM but I doubt you'd get bitten by it.

Personally, I'd lean towards the 14.

They are most likely going to perform identically 90% of the time and I couldn't tell you if more ram or more cores is better for video on a mac. Both will work for photos more than fine. Get whatever screen size you want

They didn't seem that much different, in that the 14 was livable and the 16 wasn't too big like my old 17. That said I'd like the extra resolution for photoshop panels and it would be nice to see most of the 45 megapixels my camera shits out.

I'm leaning towards the 16 even though the performance specs aren't as high.

I'd buy a $300 laptop from ebay with a powerful GPU and an i9

Do you really need a 1TB SSD? If you can get by with an external SSD then do that. That's what I've always done, no reason to get assraped by the prices.

At that price range an extra 100 bucks is nothing. Go for the one with more cores.

But I'd have to reduce memory and screen size at the same time. To have those specs with a 16" it would be $3650, which is like way too much to spend on a laptop. My absolute threshold is $3500 but I went into this originally planning on spending $2500.

I guess it'd depend on the type of video editing you're going to be doing. For the most part having a beefier GPU is good for processing video but if you're doing rudimentary stuff you might not really need the extra oomph.

I'd go for the 14 inch personally.
