Re: MacBook Pro purchase. Black Friday made the decision easier.

I was debating going with a 16in M4 Pro vs a 14in M4 Max, and really wanted the larger screen size but thought I'd regret not having the better processor and graphics. Well Best Buy had the 16in with the specs of the 14in for $400 off, which makes it cheaper than either previous choice. The only thing I'm down is 12gigs of ram (48 vs 36) but I feel like 36 is a lot already. My current computer has like 8 gigs lol.

Now I'm just waiting for the order to show up confirmed on Best Buy's website and to get a confirmation email. It shows that it's already charged my card, and it's driving me nuts! They only have two in stock so I'm sweating.

My next update will hopefully be brought to you by the blazing fast performance of the M4 Max. I can finally turn off poor mode!

Is that e-celeb status? My bf has 20k+ followers on IG. It's weird. He's always asking to take pictures of me and I'm like "no that's weird."

That's nice. My current laptop is 9 years old, cost $250 used, has a TN screen, and runs Linux.

A high spec Mac absolutely destroys all other consumer hardware for high VRAM stuff like local LLMs though. I can run 30b models on an old M1 MacBook Pro (whatever pro max ultra thing the 64 GB model was) that I bought refurbished for like 1500.

A high spec Mac Studio is like 6k and you get 192 GB of unified memory, which is absolutely insane. Sure your quad 3090s are faster, but you have less VRAM and that build is definitely not going to be as ergonomic as a little box that sits on your desk.

Also Windows is a pile of shit and Mac has better UX than Linux. I could see the argument for a really beefy Linux server + a moderate spec Mac though, which is sort of like my setup. I do my high GPU stuff on runpod though, my server only has a 2080ti.

I agree that 4k is too much for that MacBook though.

At this point the Pro models are pretty much exclusively aimed at business customers. Business pricing is generally absurd.

Wait what :marseyconfused: why would you mix your cheap ram in.

Apple truly are r-slurred

its not "cheap ram" as in SODIMMs, its on the SoC, thats why you choose the ram when you buy because you cant upgrade

Yeah I mean more that not being able to expand the cheap part is dumb.

You can get 64gb ram for like 200$, same vram is 3000 (still less than this thing :marseyxd: )

I spent way too much on my 16" max and it's been great for travelling with for a workstation setup with tbolt monitors. But it's kind of annoying to bring to a cafe since it doesn't fit neatly into nice looking normal sized messenger bags. I kinda regret not just getting an air and spending whatever the excess would have been (I really don't want to check :marseyworried:) on hookers and blow.

Either way the perf and energy efficiency on this thing is insane and I do not miss taking out my Windows laptop from my bag to find that it warm and dead for no reason after coming back from the office.

36 gigs is the minimum spec with the M4 Max.

I honestly have no use-case for this computer but I feel if I have it I will be more likely to find a use case. Hopefully. I mean I'm definitely going to regret spending $3200 on this.

Buy a thinkpad x230 and install heads. Write protect the flash chip. Put nail polish on the screws and take high resolution pictures to ensure signs of tampering. Do NOT use a HDD or SSD. They have DMA so a malicious firmware could do a lot of damage, use of USB is preferred since they do not have DMA. Completely remove the microphone, sound card, webcam and the WWAN card from the laptop. Remove the fan to prevent binary acoustic data transmission. Replace the default wifi card with a supported atheros card. Disable wifi when not in use, preferably by physically removing the card. Make your own independent Linux distro from scratch. Most Linux distros value convenience over security and will thus never have good security. Your only option is to make your own. Use musl instead of glibc, Libressl instead of openssl, sinit instead of systemd, oksh instead of bash, toybox instead of gnu coreutils to reduce attack surface. Enable as little kernel modules as possible. Use a hardened memory allocator. Apply strong SELinux and sandboxing policies. Restrict the root account heavily to make sure it never gets compromised. Disable JavaScript and CSS in your browser. Block all STRAGMAN domains in your hosts file. Monitor all network requests. Do not use a phone. Never speak near anyone who owns a phone, they are always listening. Never use any non-corebooted technology made after 2006. Never leave your devices unattended. Tape triple layer aluminum foil all around your room as tempest shielding. Type really quietly as defense against audio keylogging. Use ecc ram to minimize rowhammer and rambleed. Encrypt everything multiple times with various different encryption implementations. Compile everything from source. Use hardened compilation flags. Always read through the source before installing something if possible. Only use the internet when absolutely necessary.
