Mozilla CEO salary is equivalent to donations they receive :#marseyemojilaugh: !truthnuke !codecels :#marseytruthnuke:

JumpCrisscross 10 hours ago | root | parent | prev | next [–]

good news is that development could easily be funded by donations

Mozilla's donations are roughly equal to their CEO's compensation [1][2].

Feminist AI conference in Zambia

I don't want to donate to bullshit. I want a browser :marseychud#:

:soysmug#: Do you hate Africans? They're allowed to spend your donation on whatever they want

Then I'm not donating :marseychud#:

The bad news is that donations are unlikely to happen with the current massive misspending on overpaid people with no technical background that don't code that spend 95% of their budget on themselves, support staff that also doesn't code, offices they don't need, commercial products that flop, monetization schemes that fail, etc.

Mozilla already solicits donations, but I wonder if people who donate to them know that Mozilla funds things that are wildly not Firefox-related, like feminist AI conferences in Africa. Meanwhile Firefox looks more and more like an also-ran compared to its competition. All I ever wanted from Mozilla was a browser, not this.

https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/donate/

https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/blog/mozfest-house-zambia-...

Is your problem with Mozilla engaging in outreach and community/industry events, or just events in Africa with keynote speakers who happen to be women? Do the people in Zambia deserve an open, equitable web any less than Americans or Europeans do?

Let me repeat myself:

All I ever wanted from Mozilla was a browser

Firefox is the best alternative to a Chromium/Google dominated web. As long as Firefox isn't kicking ass and being used by, say, 20% of web users, I argue that Mozilla shouldn't be doing anything else. This is especially prudent when a large part of Mozilla's (and therefore, Firefox's) funding is in jeopardy.

So, yes, I have a problem with Mozilla doing events right now, no matter what event it might be, short of a major product launch.

Let me repeat myself:

All I ever wanted from Mozilla was a browser

Good for you. That's not how donations work.

If you donate money to an organization, you are supporting them in the work they do. How they approach that work and how they appropriate and prioritize funding is likely numerous people's entire jobs to figure out, and just because you put some money in the proverbial hat doesn't entitle you to a say in those conversations, nor does it entitle you to an explanation for the results of those conversations.

I don't precisely know why this conference was held, but that's because it is neither my job nor my business. I'm assuming it was a long, complex process to get it done, and I doubt they would've done it if the organizers just felt like getting a free trip to Zambia, or whatever other grievance-politics motive you're implying.

They went form 90%+ market share down to 9%- since taking Google money.

No Brave drama, just praise

I was hoping for some Brave drama but they're all just praising it and recommending you switch to it. As they should :#marseybrave: :#marseykneel:

Oh wait there's one comment, but no dramatic thread

The founder of Brave, Brendan Eich, had a very interesting tenure as CEO of Mozilla, resulting in his stepping down. For me, I can't support a product founded by someone who can work along side the same people he wanted keep oppressed. The same way I can't shop at Walmart because they don't pay a living wage.

If you're interested in Brave, and social issues affect your choice in who or who not to support - check his wikipedia.

bless you /u/derkster I hope this reddit ping to an orangesite username somehow finds you. This is a trans-friendly forum where we discuss tech-drama!

>oppressed

All Eich said was that he didn't approve of gay marriage, the same as Obama just 2 years earlier. It's not like he was personally lining homos up for execution or forced conversion camps.

He gave money to politicians (ew). The fact that it was to stop gay marriage is beside the point. He literally gave money to people in order to put MORE dogshit political advertising into the world. Anyone who does that, regardless of political orientation, should get the wood chipper.

The appointment triggered widespread criticism due to Eich's past political donations – specifically, a 2008 donation of $1,000 to California Proposition 8, which called for the banning of same-s*x marriage in California, and donations in the amount of $2,100 to Proposition 8 supporter Tom McClintock

typical techcels with no perspective. you need normal people in an organization too, just because they don't code doesn't mean they don't work. if all you do is cluster a bunch of permanently coding fricking tech dweebs together on a project with no oversight what you get is shit like rdrama.net

I think it's actually pretty rare to get a fully-realized product without some sort of dweeb wrangler. Usually you get a bunch of weird arcane bullshit and a lengthy crypost about how we're not going to finish what we started and it's somehow your fault.

I've been in orgs that brought in project managers and operations managers and they both wasted everyone's time on google docs and meetings. Managers by themselves are not natural value add just by the function of their jobs. The best people are ones who deeply know the business and work towards that. Teams don't need "managing" like someone sitting there inventing ways to make process, they need to be working on making everyone more $$.

Jump in the discussion.

Management bloat is peak top-down incompetence. The people at the top see that the numbers aren't good, and figure that the best way to fix that is by hiring more wranglers since wrangling is the only thing they know to do ("With enough people someone is bound to actually get this to work!"). Eventually they get a bloated army of managers that work to just fudge or outright lie about the numbers and consider that to be a success.

IMHO the EU should step in. Having a browser that is not controlled by big tech should be part of an effort to reduce the dependency on the US.

Marc Andreesen owes his riches to Netscape whose ashes became Mozilla. I don't understand why he doesn't give the Mozilla foundation and endowment such that the interest on the endowment would fund work solely on the browser. They could then just work on the browser and nothing more.

No need to do marketing, have a venture arm, millions for management, etc. it could be a group of 10 or 20 really awesome engineers and maybe a bunch of passionate open source folks contributing.

Will he do it? No. Do I wish he would? Yes. Would I if I could? Heck yes because there needs to be a viable alternative to chrome and how is that possible when chrome butters their bread and pays their bills?

why the heck would Marc want to dump money into that organizational blackhole. You invest in people first not just in projects. Maybe if he got to choose the leader running the browser arm
