Socialists are way worse than garden-variety fascists. Fascism states its desire for autocratic rule enforced by violence without justification or rationalisation. It's a simple system, akin to a mafia. The goings on of its citizens is not important as long as it doesn't challenge the mafia.
Socialism has the pretense of benevolence, so when their non-functioning economic policies deteriorates society further and further, increasingly innocent dissidents are punished harder and harder, and they go to increasingly depraved lengths to maintain the facade. They do this because they genuinely believe in their ideals, that the end justifies the means, and they have to crack a few eggs to make an omelet.
It's basically CS Lewis' quote about robber barons and idealists.
This is why the USSR crumbles as soon as you introduce glasnost and perestroika, and it's how you end up with China and North Korea if you never do so. In contrast, society had never changed much under Franco or Pinochet, and when they died Spain and Chile just democratised themselves.

Democracy is non-negotiable and tankies are fascists with different aesthetics. Socialism with NATO characteristics is the future.
