The issue Russia faces is that the west can easily and is ramping production of various equipment, small arms, bullets, body armor, night vision etc - we're at the point where your average Ukrainian infantry is better equiped than a Russian soldier is.
Ukraine is also building a fairly large counter offensive force equiped with all western equipment and trained in NATO doctrine. The Ukrainians fighting on the front right now are still a soviet style military, the force coming is completely western.
Russia lacks machine cowtools, resources, or production capability to out compete the west. So what option do they have? one of the reasons they invaded is they were afraid they would be unable to do so once the Ukrainian military westernized and were fully armed by NATO.
Now the war is dragging on so long that Ukraine is doing it anyway and converting to NATO standards at a rapid pace, and Russia is unable to replenish their losses.
Let's say America pulls the trigger and decides to pull a thousand abrams out of storage and give them to Ukraine, what does Russia do?
Let's say NATO decides to unload their f-16s on Ukraine, what does Russia do?
Let's say NATO ramps arti shell production in the next year or so, which they've already promised to do?
Time is not on their side and they know it, and they're going to grow increasingly desperate with meat grinder offensives to secure mediocre political victories they can sell back to the Russian public and make it seem like the war is going well.
The west has a lot of options - Russia does not, outside of pathetic nuclear threats they'll never act on.

ZSU (Ukraine army) on December told that they lost 13k soldiers and in March they told 16k do burgers used official Ukrainian loses made by Ukraine and they they used mediazon (supposedly independent Russian journ*list) Russian loses so those are arbitrary loses and there are still on the field a lot more Russian tanks then Ukrainian one when this graphic says Ukraine has 2 times more tanks than Russia.

USSR spammed SAMs since they new they have no hopes of matching US in the air. They weren't of any use against ICBMs, they were all against aircraft, both strategic bombers carrying nukes and regular aircraft.
But the number is so high since Russias official tank reserves numbers turned out to be mostly rusted and useless, they were supposed to have 10k+ tanks in reserve. I guess nobody revised SAM numbers down since they haven't really taken attrition there.

They (ZSU) officially on December 1 told they had 13k losses so burgers just took official Ukrainian side losses when they post it and the took Russian reporter (Mediazona) looses of Russian. The USSR doctrine was fast armored pushes through the enemy to constantly momentary gaps in defense. The key element of the was the armored brigade, which was to be entirely equipped with tracked vehicles capable of bringing infantry, fighting vehicles, artillery, and air defence along with the tanks as they fought to pierce enemy lines.
Also, the Soviets knew the US would establish air superiority over them fairly quickly. They were always 10+ years behind after the 60s, and couldn't rely on aircraft for air defence or fire support, unlike the US, where "vulnerable" infantry in lightly armored vehicles could expect better protection and firepower from aircraft, and hence weren't as obsessed about slapping giant guns and missiles to tank and IFV chassis.

Couple interesting pieces for sure- confirms that ER-JDAMs are being used (speculation), Russia has a massive advantage in tactical air power, and that Ukraine is rapidly depleting stocks of the S-300, hence the need for Patriots all of a sudden.
Also, and in "holy shit if true"- Russia appears to have 2/3s of their total tank force already destroyed and half of their IFVs. That's on par with the worst-case numbers people were tossing around, and it seems like Ukraine actually has a good chance for a big push in their next offensive based on vehicle/troop numbers and getting higher tech weapons, even if they won't have meaningful airpower.
