I've seen the CIA's estimate of what the Afghanistan war cost the Soviets. They went through in extreme detail calculating how much fuel each battalion would use and stuff. They concluded that it was really not a big drain on their economy. Which seems plausible to me because if they weren't fighting a war they would still have all those troops sitting on the border doing nothing and costing a lot.
