I used too love reading the codices and black library as a kid. Allende tried reading gaunts ghosts from their best writer recently and it was just garbage. Absolutely trash almost unreadable.

The expanded lore was trash, the ork lore was good because it was actually fun, parts of the codices were okay

They never show off the scale of the setting properly. Planetary invasions have army numbers less than the amount of troops in WW2 or modern day lol. Plus everything looks the same despite having millions of planets too make up cool stuff for. MayflyAlt98 want my myrmidons

Dan Abnett is seriously overrated imo. Especially his battles make no sense. Know no fear for examle. Half the book is basically Ultrasmurfs being betrayed and slaughtered, especially their fleet, with the last remants fighting for sheer survival until the word bearers leave, and then in the end theyre at half strength and the word bearers that betrayed them and basically sucker-punched the entire planet
