F(un), I(nviting), R(eplayable), and E(xciting) card design has completely bodied competitive Magic. Look no further than Throne of Eldraine, a complete disaster for every format with Oko being banned in all except Vintage and Commander iirc. Beyond that, Modern Horizons and the printing of tri-lands has made every tier 1 deck in eternal formats 4&5 color soup or "goodstuff" decks.
I used to enjoy playing modern and standard competitively but now the only format that has any variety and skill expression at all is cEDH imo. Formats are entirely defined by overtuned and pushed Mythic Rares so that Hasbro/WotC can market sealed product to all players, not just standard players like it was previously.
TL;DR: FIRE design, forced cards, and corporate greed ruined competitive Magic. Casual can still be fun though.
