The whole satire thing is one of the biggest copes going. Only a few authors remember it and it effectively never hits the actual gamebooks. The Imperium is evil and over the top and that's cool and fun and why we love it. People who deny this either by going down the it's satire or they're justified actually want to ruin what makes the setting fun. No one wants to build, play or read something built around moralstragging and turning it into gothic space Marvel is even lamer.

People seem to forget that the point of fiction is to engage in something that is not real.

Yeah, its never been actual explicit satire. It's simply over the top and supposed to be absurd. There are some satirical representations of reality simply because thats the time and culture it was made in, but the setting as a whole has never been satire, meaning a representation of reality with the purpose of saying something about reality. Thats what the media literacy (who are ironically the least media literate of all) and "everything's polotical" spergs cant grasp. The setting doesnt have a political message and isnt supposed to tell you how to vote. But that idea of course is completely alien to terminally online wingcucks.

I don't understand the satire campaigns for this and helldivers and stuff like that. You can talk shit about chuds taking over-the-top fiction to reality, but what do you get out of something like that if you're supposed to constantly be of the mind that it is satirical? Mark Twain is satire, you laugh at the absurdity of his satirical characters, some you can empathize with, but you go into it with humor. Doonsberry is libshit satire comic, someone is supposed to laugh at the long noses peepee Cheney trying to do even more evil shit than real life peepee Cheney. Am I media illiterate on what satire is? What are the nonchuds doing when they shoot the aliens in games and repeat the slogans and paint the flags? They are ALWAYS laughing at it and thinking it's what Drumpfers think? "Ha, ha, I'm simulating fascism, this is so funny, because fascism is dumb. I look like such a goof!"

Yes, having talked to my progressive friends that discovered Warhammer recently this is exactly how they look at it. They like that Warhammer is over the top and ridiculous (like everyone else) but they interpret everything through the lens of "this is making fun of conservatives, everything the Imperium does is wrong and if they just did the opposite then all the galaxy's problems would be fixed very quickly; warhammer is a cautionary tale about what will happen if rightoids gain power"

Do they just play/conjecture playing the Tau for the table top game? Do they play any of the video games - where they play as a space marine or imperium - or read any of the books? Or watch the animated shit games workshop releases?
"Ha ha, I'm slaughtering the xenos, this is what conservatives think, ha ha!" It just sounds like The Other Guys when Mark Whalburger keeps saying he learned things thoroughly like ballet so he could make fun of people.

It stopped being satire and started being a tragedy in 3e, more than a quarter century ago

Satire of what? It was cartoony sci-fi schlock then, not satire. It became more grim sci-fi schlock in 3rd edition.
