I wonder if they will eventually hit a sort of malthusian limit on their population growth or if there is no limit to the amount of handmade furniture and raw milk they can profitably sell to technology folk

Israel is facing the same question with their Ultra-Orthodox NEETs, people cope and say it can't go on forever but it's really showing no signs of stopping. The US would restablish a solid white majority due to the Amish and Mormons if they stopped immigration right now.

I think the truth is that the whole world will soon be covered in the most traditionalist and fecund of their respective religions. The hard veering of Israel and Turkey to the right is down to this demographic phenomenon.

Israeli orthodox are kind of different because theyre literal welfare queens right? Its not a sustainable situation. Likewise it's easy to see how the Mennonite lifestyle could be legislated out of existence with property tax hikes. The Mormons are the only ones who really seem to have a robust culture that integrates with the modern economy

The Orthodox Jews like :marseyshapiro: find the balancing act and have like 4-5 kids each, down a bit from the 8 that the Ultra-Orthodox have, but still double the replacement rate. That's what the Mormons do as well. I imagine the Amish will eventually follow suit after their niche is exhausted.

The Israeli Ultra-Orthodox are slowly coming to the table and making compromises about working, but are really selective about how and where.
