By biblical accounts, it lends more to him being literate considering it says he was teaching in the temple daily which would involve reading from the scriptures and a lot of what he said was straight quotations from the OT.

The book starts off with the history of Judaism and goes up through the founding of the catholic church, and it's all pretty interesting. The speculation about literacy is mostly based on Jesus having literally never left any of his own writing behind and the major founders of his church acting as his mouthpiece after he was already dead.

If he had written anything himself, there's not a very plausible reason there wouldn't be a record of it, considering the apostles managed to preserve all of their own writings, in my opinion.
