This new indie jrpg surprised the crap out of me (go wishlist)

https://x.com/RiyoGames/status/1836536073096495118

I haven't been checking every single time these guys uploaded but for like 2 years all they uploaded were 2D gifs of random characters walking or enemies attacking. I followed regardless because it's a chrono trigger-like as a concept

I do enjoy me some art regardless it's all very pleasing.

The other day unbeknownst to myself they showed an ENTIRE TRAILER which caused them to get 100,000 wishlists on steam. Holy shit I didn't even realize this was an actual game that was coming out. A lot of games never even leave the concept stage.

BEHOLD A FULLY ANIMATED 3D ANIME TRAILER OF A 2.5D CHRONO TRIGGER-LIKE.

naw he's right, turn based 2d sucks. 9/10 times it's so simple a python script could do all the combat for you

Turn based isnt inherently bad but 95% of turn based games are designed to be simple enough that an elementary schooler could beat them

Turn based jrpgs have NEVER been good

Literally only supermario rpg and chrono trigger were good but that is only because mario was already cool and so is akira toriyama

Fallout NV is pretty close

Unsurprising opinion from you.

The reason people like NV is because it lets them murder hobo bethesda style while feeling smug because everyone says it has a deep story.

I played it a bunch, but looking back it wasn't really anything special.

It hardly forces player to do anything past the intial peepee inspection, there is no railroading like in Betheada sloppgs.

I wouldn't call it deep, but the writing is certainly above average and tries to be nuanced, unlike a looooot of media.

I'll be honest other than ancient 2d RPG's I don't know what other game comes close to the freedom NV gives, while still being a story driven RPG and not some sandbox with radiant quest bullshit.

Cloud is literally me. That means I am in the game. That means it's very good.

What politics in fallout are comparable at all? Beyond the idea of pure authority to help us evolve vs individuality that keeps your nature

The final fantasy games aren't political at all. Fallout, Deus ex, and metal gear just spit out political jargon but it doesn't actually amount to anything coherent.

How dare you lump ff7 and deus ex together

I take it back also, MGS is the most overrated game

Tell me you don't understand well-written characters set within a political narrative backdrop versus a surface level political diversity checkbox marvel-tier quip fest about current year politics without telling me you don't understand [all that] (I'm lazy).

its the best vidiot game

Well thats not true. Thats FF10 in the Final Fantasy series and Cyberpunk 2077 in modern times, and Skyrim in Boomer times.

Skyrim is a massive downgrade in terms of RPG elements and the SOVL of the older Elder Scroll games that were casualized for foids and fratbros.

Cyberpunk 2077 is still a looter-shooter thats still stripped down from what they promised.

Fight me.

Nah not a chance.

FF7 is one of the only FF games :marseylegioncommander: that's worth a shit at all, and was good enough :marseyitsallsotiresome: to give Square :marseypunching: carte blanche to shit out complete garbage :marseyraccoontrouble: for almost 30 years off of the prestige earned by one legitimately fantastic :marseytaratheandroid: game.

Chrono Trigger and Super :marseyspiderman2: Mario :marseyenterpipe: RPG are both infinitely more overrated than ff7.

Chrono Trigger and SMRPG are objectively the best JRPGs if only because they're only like ten to twenty hours long

FF fans be like

Maybe :marseymight: if you played good JRPGs, your opinion on the matter :marseypinkname: wouldn't be so terrible.

What's the appeal of JRPGs from a gameplay (not plot) perspective? They have the most bare-bones character building compared to normal RPGs, and your decisions in combat require a) no reaction time and b) no skill since you're always just picking the strongest spell or attack you've got.

Yeah sure bro you cast Firaga twelve times in a row, I'm really frickin impressed

JRPGs were great when we were ten because we lacked any skill or competency to play real games
