This Bethesda hubbub feels so alien. People are screeching over Starfield like it killed their cat, while at the same time heralding their old games like Skyrim as masterpieces. Meanwhile to me, Starfield and Skyrim were both mediocre and their issues are mostly the same. I do think Skyrim was better but eh. We're not talking words of difference here.
The main thing Bethesda games had going for them was a crack-like quality so you would play the shit out of them for hundreds of hours before the effect wore off and you said the game was always shit. Sort of like fast food where you'll crave it after a while even though you always regret eating it after. Why do we need video essays galore over this shit

The main reason I believe is twofold. Firstly, old Elder Scrolls fans always hated Skyrim, FO4, Starfield, and the newer games, because they sucked compared to previous titles. The new fans liked Skyrim because, for most, it was their first RPG, or at least their first good one, and so its crumminess was overlooked because the concept was so novel. They still keep this sentiment though because it was their first RPG, and your first time in anything will be remembered the best. But as they play more RPGs they develop a taste of what is good and what is bad, so when the next Bethesda turd pops out they get the taste that the Morrowind or Oblivion nerds got when Skyrim came out. I like Skyrim and even go back every year or two for a little trip down memory lane, but every time I feel like it was a waste of time because of how bad it is.
