I'm on your side. This is the difference between science which, you are describing, says that being obese is one of the biggest indicators of poor health, and The Science™ which is a religion and is inherently political. The clergy of "experts" in my original comment should be in quotes. The problem is even if it's fringe, people believe it, they have faith in it, which makes Scientism a religion.

It seems more like they're twisting science and using it as a justification for things they already want to believe rather than them following it blindly and seeing it as the only valuable source of knowledge and guidance (which is what comes to mind when hearing "Scientism")
