We can add theology to the list for both. Christcuckery for rightoids, Critical Theory and Post Modernism for Leftoids.

100% perfect

Leftoids love to invoke their love of The Science but also deny that you can ever really know anything

Science is a rational approach, a method if you will, to understanding the world around you. When new evidence is discovered, your hypothesis or theory will have to change. This is why something that was common knowledge can change and change again. It can be frustrating, but with a bigger knowledge set we understand more. This is why we have smartphones while the ancient Egyptians didn't despite being just as intelligent as us today. To add, science is never settled, it's just that the best evidence we have today says this.

The problem is Scientism, or the belief or Faith in science. This is simply religion repackaged. In my experience, most Leftoids have an axe to grind with Mom and dad who made them go to church and eat vegetables. Well now that they're heckin adulting, they don't have to go to church or eat nasty vegetables. Thankfully there's The Science™! The Science™ is settled, is infallible, it has a clergy of "experts" that tell you that you can drink 2 2400 cal Starbucks and eat cookies all day while being healthy! Take THAT mom and dad. The Science™ also just so happens to line up with whatever the progressive cause de jure is. Point is science and the scientific method is good, Scientism and The Science™ is bullshit.

Where have you been? There's a whole denomination of Scientism that's about how being 600 lbs is totes healthy.

Fringe nonsense with no basis in scientific data, there was never a point in time where any significant percentage of nutrition experts and doctors actually believed that it is just as healthy to be morbidly obese. You can find people with PhDs who publish books about ancient aliens or flat earth but those aren't taken seriously and rightfully so. The popularity of your examples is artificial and due to them being pushed politically.

I'm on your side. This is the difference between science which, you are describing, says that being obese is one of the biggest indicators of poor health, and The Science™ which is a religion and is inherently political. The clergy of "experts" in my original comment should be in quotes. The problem is even if it's fringe, people believe it, they have faith in it, which makes Scientism a religion.

It seems more like they're twisting science and using it as a justification for things they already want to believe rather than them following it blindly and seeing it as the only valuable source of knowledge and guidance (which is what comes to mind when hearing "Scientism")

Well yeah. That's what pisses me off about when redditors repeat "science factoids" at you but they obviously don't know the actual fundamentals other than the end point.

Like, if you say "XY is male, XX is female" they'll quote SRY/androgen insensitivity on you.

But they couldn't explain the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology To you, or the base structure of amino acids and beta sheets and alpha helices. They pass around a copypasta of links to things they can't understand to share with you, and declare it an intellectual victory.

They couldn't propose a hypothesis their way out of a wet paper bag.
