The unfortunate reality is that in the time I have worked for this department, our black employees have been significantly over-represented among our poor performers. Issues relating to IQ have certainly been a factor (poor attention to detail, subpar written/spoken communication, taking longer to absorb/adapt to training and feedback, etc.) although cultural factors have also been consistent (i.e. tardiness/frequent absences, friction relating to somewhat-racialized aspects of interpersonal communication, complaints about other employees). The noticeable overrepresentation hasnβt been extreme, and if I hadnβt been here very long or I was strongly committed to not noticing race, I could imagine the pattern escaping me, and certainly weβve had some very poor performers (and some very high-achieving employees) from all races in the time Iβve been here. Still, once itβs something youβve reflected on, the correlation is impossible to miss.
