Had an assignment where kids created campaign posters for if they ran for President (they are 9th-10th graders). One kid turned his in and one of his campaign points was "gay people should be in jail."

EDIT: I have a feeling the kids also know I am gay myself and that it may have been intentional. I have also expressed how I do not tolerate hateful speech or ideas in my class many times. I told them at the beginning of the assignment to not say anything offensive or inappropriate.

Inmates Running Asylum

My school is a clear example of what happens when inmates are in control of the asylum. Or, to ditch the metaphor, when kids run the school.

My school has no consequences. Literally. Kids can do whatever they want and there's no consequences. Smoke pot in the bathroom? Nothing. Walk out of class? Nothing. Destroy property? Nothing. Wear their masks below their mouths or not at all (we have a mandate)? Nothing. Our students have literally gone into the community to away sports games and destroyed other school property, as well as personal property (vandalized a car). At a school function. No repercussions whatsoever despite knowing exactly who the perpetrators were. And the woman whose car was destroyed decided not to press charges because "they're just kids!" Kids were issued brand new Macbook Airs this year, and already a solid percentage have had to be repaired. I see kids slamming them shut, dropping them from a foot in the air, holding them by the screen, etc. Nothing happens.

The truth is worse than your metaphor. Well educated building administration and superintendent collect what is probably an ample salary to hand over control to the inmates. I'm not certain, but suppose that most of the parents don't know how bad it is or approve. Obviously this won't serve the children. A small number of parents spend their time making unreasonable demands, wrecking the school for everyone.

it feels like it might be a sucky situation where there is a group of really bad inmates, but a group of teachers have decided the inmates are a united front of evil and treating the inmates with disdain, thereby fueling a situation where the normal inmates feel like they have to take sides with the obnoxious inmates since the teachers have strong anti-inmate vibes. I saw this happen from a distance at a nearby school, bitter teachers were playing into this cycle and everyone was under constant suspicion because of a small group of delinquents, causing even more peopl, I mean inmates--- to lash out.

We had a lockdown drill today in first grade

A lot of the kids wanted to talk and comment afterward.

"What do we do if we're in the bathroom when the doors get locked?"

Many were anxious and nervous.

I hate America sometimes.

Back when I was a kid we had fire drills. Maybe a tornado drill once in a while.
