No lie there was a time the apache helicopter joke was meaningful humor

Those of us who were queer in that age--in that age, if you were nonbinary-ish or just very uncomfortable with heteronormativity you had queer theory laid out before you, which basically just says you can relax because gender is performative and who gives a frick.

Those of us who were queer in that age, me at least, loved the apache helicopter joke. An apache helicopter is pure power. The throbbing of the rotors. The maneuverability.

The rockets. The machine guns.

Cold metal... there's nothing sexy about it at all, and yet... THOKKA THOKKA THOKKA here I am, an apache helicopter.

I never actually identified as an apache attack helicopter, even at the time, but darn if I didn't think it was funny.

Then the darn morons used it as a club to make fun of nonbinary people. Ruined the joke. Ruined the meaning of the joke. That's one purpose of jokes, to discuss the serious meaning behind the obscuring force of the taboo.

Get used to it. There are people who think that this euphemism treadmill, this abuse of language rendering the previously spoken freely into a social faux pax is the result of some ideological monstrosity. In truth it's just the dynamic cycle of the social human being. The ideology is in viewing it as a hostile ideological force instead of as a turning of the seasons of our words.

Yes it sucks but don't be mad at leftists because the helicopter joke is done. Jokes have shelf lives and that's just a fact of life, don't make that the foundation of your politics or you'll be an oNline Political Character.

I miss those days where the whole point was that you didn't have a label and that you could just do what you wanted. I was always friends with the weird kids who liked Rocky Horror and actinglike freaks back then, and now all those types of people have become insufferable and I've probably made fun of some old friends online at some point

I never found the joke that funny but I think it actually conveys a salient point regarding the current gender ideology madness over in burger-land. If gender is unmoored from biology and social norms/expectations, why should there be any limits as to what gender can exist? If, as some online gender ideologues like to argue, the definition of what woman/man is can't be pinned down because not everyone has the same definition of a chair either, then a person's gender can only be determined through self-identification. If so, why shouldn't someone be able to identify as an attack helicopter? And if gender is a protected characteristic, why shouldn't society accommodate that person's gender preferences? If they like to pee and shit on a helipad because that's a helicopter's "potty", why would that be invalid? If someone identifies as a Napoleon Bonaparte and insists on being addressed as His Imperial Majesty, why would that be any less acceptable than a transwoman who wants to be addressed as she/her?

I think there is a spectrum of activists, with the majority of lgbt people I know disliking those weird gender identity like emperor-self or whatever.

To me it seems like an internally contradictory position, as you say . If self recognition is the only criteria, and outward appearance does not matter, then we must accept the sollipsist spiral.

I think the only way to reconcile this would be transmedicalism; the person knows they don't look like a woman/man but they request you treat them as such to help their medical condition. Yet this way of thinking is very unpopular... somehow.

That's my ideal solution as well. Only people who are medically diagnosed with gender dysphoria by experts can be legally allowed to change gender and people would, hopefully, treat them as their preferred gender. But a mental illness isn't nearly as sexy as made up genders so the Zoomers won't be so keen on it. :marseyshrug:

The thing though is that they fall back on "trans bodies will DIE if you don't respect pronouns", so they do medicalize being trans when it suits them.

This shit is such a morass of contradictions. Trans people I've met in real life are like, normal people. The internet really ruins everything.

The biggest problem is that s*x and gender, to use leftist lingo, really are related. I am an older brother of many sisters, so I helped raise them from babies to functioning children. I would always try to get them to do things I found fun, like sword fights with paper towel rolls or playing like superheroes, but, while they might've humored me for a bit, they were always more interested in thier dolls. No one was forcing them to do that, in fact, I was pressuring them not to do that, but they still did it.

It reminds me of the story of young Achilles . He was disguised as a woman by his mother to prevent him from being sent off to war, but even disguised as a woman, and being surrounded by women for his whole life, he was instantly enamored with a sword.

THAT BEING SAID, I think post 70s or 80s, the idea of "manliness" was having a crisis, and men wanted to differentiate themselves from women, who had recently shown themselves to be as capable as men in most things. Hence, we got an almost ironic idea of what a man was that was over the top and unattainable. Hence, when a person failed to reach that ideal, they felt like they didn't belong.

People forget that it was men who wrote most of our poetry, who painted most of our masterpieces, and wrote our history books. Men did non-violent jobs and produced beautiful art for the last several thousand years.

The point is that while how a person is raised probably has something to do with the specific way they express their sexuality, the underlying sexuality still has a role to play, even if that differs from what we might call "ironic masculinity".

I always though this gender is a spectrum nonsense is directly antithetical to the trans ideology, like they are men who want to be women or vice versa, their entire identity relies on gender being binary. If anyone can be any gender they can can choose, what is even the point of having trans as an identifier? how can you be a non binary transgender, that doesn't make any sense, you are transgender, which means you went from being a man to a woman because you felt more like a woman and above that you are non binary which means you don't feel like a woman or a man all the time. It just doesn't make any sense, thats why I feel like any questioning of this genderbenderism is immediately suppressed with prejudice. There is absolutely no defence for it.

That's cool

But guess what...?

I am a masculine coded attack helecopter.

my pronouns are apache/apachim/apachis

and guess what?

I'm was never fricking joking

I refuse to let lame butt right wingers take away the (COMPLETELY VALID <3) mogai gender that I as a non-neurotypical person feel the most connection to.

I'm gonna be honest. I appreciate your write up, and I'm happy the "meme" about a gender very similar to mine made you feel secure as an nb person, and I won't fault you for enjoying a joke, but uh... yeah. This is a bit yikes because it still marginalizes REAL gender possibilities, and comes off as really narrow-minded and gatekeepy of what might actually be important and a legit experience for someone. Expecially someone who isn't neurotypical and has strongly alternative feelings of gender, even more so than someone who is simply nonbinary and likely to express their gender simply on a spectrum of (masculine/feminine), as opposed to a three four, or otherwise n-dimensional gender expression. I guess what I most take issue with, is the statement that "gender is performative" when many see their gender as a very strong and real experience. To call it "performative" is almost like gaslighting, because it tells a person "hey this thing you feel and IS A PART OF YOU is actually just an act lol" when there is SO MUCH MORE TO IT THAN THAT.

ALL. GENDERS. ARE. VALID.

respect xenogenders <3

that is all

The moral quality of a joke doesn't effect how funny it is. What makes the helicopter joke not funny is the fact that it is overplayed.
