One of the commonly cited issues with Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings series from the early 2000s is its lack of diversity

literally who is is saying this other than nobodies on twitter lmao

We hear about it in computer science all the time

oh god i remember being in college in a slightly more neurodivergent version of comp sci that involved a lot of electrical engineering and jesus if there was a girl in the class people would get there 15 minutes early just to talk to her and offer to do literally everything for her

glad to hear they didn't make it through to the real world, sad hr shitbags have taken control anyway

I'm a TA. I was happy this year to see a girl's name on our roster for the first time in my life.

She's a train :)

Computer engineering had more girls and hotter girls than compsci at my uni. Mostly because compsci had all the weeb loser girls and compeng had the actually smart ones

Aren't Orcs considered black people to fantasy nerds? I don't see the problem

I can't wait for the TV series to come out. Literally everything about it so far looks terrible. Tolkiencels have a very special brand of autism and I want to see it unleashed.

They usually keep to themselves so I don't have much of prior opinion on them.

How's r/tolkien handling it?

Genuine LOTR fans tend to be conservative in their views. Tolkien was a strong Christian who wanted to write a mythos for the uncultured Br*ts, and a lot of his concepts don't exactly mesh well with the current zeitgeist. The fanbase is steadily being assaulted by millenials and zoomers who watched Jackson's films and now want to correct these problematic issues, but so far the old guard is holding firm.

Here's their reaction to the first promotional shots of the show:

https://old.reddit.com/r/lotr/comments/owk4mf/lotr_on_prime_instagram_account_just_shared_the/?sort=controversial

Apparently there are two trees in the wrong place which is a capital offense, but they otherwise seem cautiously optimistic.

Now here's the reaction to the annoucement of black hobbits:

https://old.reddit.com/r/lordoftherings/comments/q7d2z7/multicultural_hobbits_in_amazon_series/?sort=controversial

They're seething. Hobbits are explicitly Tolkien's versions of rural Englishmen, i.e. mayo, and they're barely supposed to exist at all in the time period the show is covering.

This post was clearly written by a shit-stirrer.

Lol, there a lot of people in that last thread going

โ€œthere are no black hobbits in Tolkienโ€™s worksโ€

โ€œ***but***โ€

Iโ€™m surprised thereโ€™s little counter seethe to those comments.

Iโ€™m really curious to see the inner workings of a troll sometimes. The folks who painted the street did nothing wrong but youโ€™re coming in here trying to distract and call them out or delegitimize them somehow. Why? I think youโ€™re just trying to distract: BLM did something not illegal and might โ€œlook goodโ€ in this situation and folks like you canโ€™t let that be. Gotta detract or make it seem bad somehow. Am I close? If not, why join in with what you said, given it wasnโ€™t relevant to the article at all.
