Biggest Losers in History Continue to Lose : most First Nations have no clean water but Iqualit does until someone adds diesel fuel into it. Now whole city is fricked but they seethe about “climate change”.

https://nunatsiaq.com/stories/article/city-took-a-gamble-with-iqaluits-water-supply

Drama occurring in Nunavut where city officials continue to be perplexed as to why and how diesel fuel is in the cities water (hint: some butthole pumped diesel fuel into the water supply) their best guess is because of Climate Change(tm).

City officials have good news in that at least it isn’t Benzene - benzene can give you butthole cancer where diesel just makes you barf and pass out.

It’s not ideal, of course. It caused those headaches and stomach issues people around Iqaluit have been reporting for the past few weeks but, says Patterson, ingesting these chemicals is not known to cause long-term health effects in humans.

No biggie just like a bad buzz and hangover. At least it’s not Benezene.

Cost to repair the water system for the city of approx 35,000 is estimated to be 130-150 million. Meanwhile people are drinking water out of the nearby river while all businesses and even Hospitals are closed.

Reasonable Mayo asks:

The people living there have made a choice to stay there, and try to make a home / life out of it. I really struggle to understand how that's the responsibility of government.

People have lived and survived up there for thousands and thousands of years. They had to find sustainable water for that to happen. How did they manage in the past? Why is it now the governments responsibility to provide this water?

Frick you whitey! Whitey came and fricked up their lives, so help us you mayo prick!

They were able to live and flourish up there and all over canada for that matter before the europeans came.... and then their way of life was corrupted to the point where there are too many external forces hindering their ability to survive.

Weird question. Would he be asking it if it was a mayo town? Are Eskimos not Canadian citizens? What is this even about? Government has the responsibility for shit like that, same as it would if, idk, a flood would destroy the local town's roads and electric lines. That's what it's fricking for, lmao.

Interesting phenomenon is that Inuit (Eskimos) are NOT Canadian citizens if you ask them, they are Iqualit First Nations.... up until the moment when one of them pumps diesel fuel into their water then it becomes a Canada problem. They literally live in some of the most inhabitable land on earth - it's tundra, like a frozen desert. It doesn't rain there, hardly snows, there are no trees only stone and ice. You can't even drill a well there because the earth is permanently frozen.

Nobody in the right minds would live there and if you did you certainly wouldn't expect modern creature comforts - there's no road that goes there you can only access it by boat or plane.

I don't care about interesting phenomena, I'm asking legally. Is Nunavut a Canadian territory? Yes. Are people that live the Canadian citizens? Yes. Government services aren't supposed to be based on self-identity, or at least haven't been since, idk, the fall of feudalism.

>Nobody in the right minds would live there and if you did you certainly wouldn't expect modern creature comforts - there's no road that goes there you can only access it by boat or plane.

69°20′ N, btw, 6 degrees further north than Iqaluit. Accessible only by plane for half a year, boat traffic available (with nuclear icebreakers, like this one) the other half.

Just because Canadians don't give a frick about their north, doesn't mean that maintaining civilisation there is impossible. Maybe Anglos shouldn't have been allowed to own anything in the Arctic, they clearly aren't built for it...

Ooooh you're clearly very passionate about this and I wasn't expecting that kind of passion here, I'm genuinely impressed. I'd say Canadians absolutely DO give a frick about the north and our abos as demonstrated by the recent recognition of Truth and Reconciliation day despite our loser Prime Minister making a mockery of it by skipping out to go surfing on its first observance. Also, one of his top promises was to deliver potable and reliable water to the North which he's also failed to do miserably. You and I are in agreement - it's abhorrent that anyone living in Canada anywhere within our borders to not have access to clean water... full stop.

I see what you've posted is Norway and yes it easily demonstrates your point. Problem with Canada and our first nations as I see it is this: unification. It is always "Us" and "Them" on both sides and I flippantly demonstrated some of the problem - First Nations people are First Nations first. They have their own government seperate from ours, they have their own passports seperate from ours, they have their own criminal system seperate from ours. They are content to be Iqualit all the time until something like water contamination forces them to seek help from the federal government --- and then, most often, the Federal Government are peepees about it or make buttholes of themselves or the First Nations leaders will do whatever they can to obstruct the Feds at every turn either for political reasons or corruption reasons (bilk as much money from the feds as they can).

So as you can see, it's complicated. Added to the multi bureaucracy levels is years of mistrust of federal Canada agencies for just reasons.

Good talk, thanks for your interest in my country.

Not really. I just don't like this weird separation of people into "ours" and "theirs" within your own country. If you really can't be bothered to deal with people living on some part of your territory - cede it to someone that will. Otherwise act like you actually own it, there is no third alternative.

I see what you've posted is Norway and yes it easily demonstrates your point.

Russia, actually. Norway can get to almost all of its territory by land (Svalbard which it kinda/sorta shares with Russia excluded), so they didn't bother developing that sort of tech. Nuclear, year-round Arctic capable icebreakers are exclusive to Russia.

So as you can see, it's complicated. Added to the multi bureaucracy levels is years of mistrust of federal Canada agencies for just reasons.

Well, fair enough. Dealing with all sorts of isolated populations is always difficult, but it's not a reason to suddenly act like they're not your responsibility. If you don't want that responsibility - feel free to frick off and pull a Malaysia with Singapore thing. That was always allowed, I'm sure someone will gladly pick them up, for the sea routes if no other reason.

I mean, governments have a duty to their citizens, and the citizens also have a duty to their governments. Norilsk only exists and is only supported because it has the largest nickel deposit in the world and has a massive metallurgy industry. Pretty sure most of it was originally built by gulag labor too. It's a net positive to keep it well supplied.

The Artic natives and their reservations contribute nothing to Canada. They're a net drain. I don't think they should be abandoned or deprived of civil services, but they should be relocated to somewhere habitable.

The Hudson Bay region has very low year-round average temperatures. The average annual temperature for Churchill at 59°N is −6 °C or 21.2 °F and Inukjuak, facing cool westerlies in summer at 58°N, an even colder −7 °C or 19.4 °F. By comparison, Magadan, in a comparable position at 59°N on the Eurasian landmass in the Russian Far East and with a similar subarctic climate, has an annual average of −2.7 °C or 27.1 °F.[28] Vis-à-vis geographically closer Europe, contrasts stand much more extreme. Arkhangelsk at 64°N in northwestern Russia has an average of 2 °C or 36 °F,[29] while the mild continental coastline of Stockholm at 59°N on the shore of an analogous large hyposaline marine inlet – the Baltic Sea – has an annual average of 8 °C or 46 °F.[30]

The Government of Nunavut pays a northern allowance to make up the differences in the cost of living between Nunavut communities and larger designated southern centres. The allowance is paid based on the community of employment. Currently, it varies from $15,016 to $34,455 annually.
