The other commenter was right. OWS was ground zero. Look up the 'progressive stack' which pissed off and alienated the core of the group which did the most work.

I mean I don't think it's that hard to figure out. As economic issues became more front and center in the post-2008 era the elite political class decided to start weaponizing issues like this to keep people distracted.

The reason this became so popular amongst upper-class white liberals is that it allows them to attack the "system" and signal virtue to their own social class without ever actually enaging in meaningful change or giving up anything of value.

When some upper-class white liberal is waxing poetic about "white privilege" and "racial injustice" it allows for self-criticism without ever actually engaging in real self-criticism.

Declaring yourself "privileged" on the grounds of your skin color doesn't require anything to remedy outside of acknowledging your privilege - declaring yourself privileged on economic grounds requires yourself to engage in activities that might harm your material conditions in the long run, which is not something your average narcissistic white upper class liberal will do.

Republicans had been at this for years before liberals were - except in the context of self-reliance. Liberals know the system is rigged, they just don't want to identify the correct reasons why because it'd harm their own conditions if they did.

Republicans depend on denying that the system is rigged to trick poor people into voting against their own economic interests. The entire concept of "self-reliance" serves this mission very well.

Humans are not self-reliant creatures, the concept is completely foreign to us. But through some verbal witchcraft conservatives convince lower cllass poor white people that they too will one day be wealthy as long as they keep cutting taxes on the rich.

It really is genius.

I'd also like to point out that OWS was a flash point as others have said, but this has existed for long before OWS, always bubbling beneath the surface, all it needed was a crack.
