The denizens of the United States could and should be characterized by their short term thinking which was the disease of their culture's rot. It's not insignificant to think that this has some connection to the absence of any formal measurement system for Deep Time. The best that can be said is for periods of 8 years of their most prominent leader. Even the pseudo-dynastic form of the presidency as occurred infrequently do not truly merit any sincere or useful evaluation of Deep Time. Sure, Bush II invaded Iraq as did his father before him. This could constitute planning in the scope of time as deep as a decade or so, but this is but a single drop in the seven-drop lifespan of human-as-ant.
Take a trip back. The last notch in Deep Time was 1952.
Then: 1901.
Then: 1838.
Then: 1831 (there are some blips in this measurement technique)
Then: 1820.
Then: 1761.
And further back into Deep Time. Dwell Now Ye Gathered In Awe, and pour one out for our homey Queen Elizabeth II, Long Was Her Watch. At the end of the day, it becomes a gift of God embraced, that there was a human there with eyes to see and a heart to feel, at the center of the declined imperium. Rest Now, for it is a turning of the age.
And mark ye: this, to 1761, is the entire span of the United States. Lacking any sort of ceremonial clock, the United States is fixated on short term gain. The jockeying of its nobility for advantage is played out entirely in fiefdoms of corporate supply chains. To be a great house, as in Dune, is to have been granted by taking the function of the State to provide material. An aristocracy is a natural, if regrettable, outcome of human biology. Trimming the aristocracy becomes a complex problem.

Any event can be a notch in time. The astrological phenomenon of "Saturn's Return" is useful precisely just because it repeats at intervals corresponding to roughly a third of a human's lifespan.
Like tree rings for a tree, every four/eight years a notch in time is measured in the US with the mechanism of the State. In the UK it doesn't run on a strict schedule: it is tied to a single human's lifespan, time in the spotlight of the State. Any longer and it would, arguably, be incomprehensible.
What makes these useful notches for "Deep Time" is specifically that they occur at the longest possible interval without exceeding the maximum human direct chronological experential interval.

If somebody were to live forever, would their thinking even be recognizably human anymore? Individual humans would be as short lived as dogs to them - potential pets or domesticated tools but hardly an equal. They would perceive the world in Deep Time, and make plans measured in centuries. Most people can't even plan five years ahead; even a twenty year plan looks incredible to them. How would they perceive a plan spanning three hundred years?

You can get a non-human perspective by deep meditation or drugs that disconnect you from your sense of self. Also, there are mental disorders which completely distort reality and make you think like a generic lovecraftian eldritch horror. But itβs my opinion that none of this make you βnon-humanβ, I donβt really think the phrase βlosing your humanityβ makes any sense considering deliberate, calculated evil deeds as well as good ones are inherently human traits, and off-the-scale bizzaro thinking also falls under the human cognition umbrella. Itβs just a demonization of the unusual.

Pretty cool that she met all the US presidents since Eisenhower or Truman . Maybe our understanding of time has changed since the 1900's. The amount of time between WW1 and WW2 was like 20 years and for 50 years after that there was a constant fear of nuclear apocolypse. All of a sudden every decade or even year became important.

I don't say this often, but you're right. We are entering a new era - one of crisis. The unipolar moment is firmly over, and now the West, especially Europe, enters a grave crisis. Very poetic - as Boris goes, so does Queen Elizabeth II, and so does this moment. Winter is coming, and it's not gonna be good for Europe, thanks to the Ukranian War and Putin shutting off the pipes... slowly. Gone is the era of Europe as the retirement home of old Empires, for crisis has come for them once more.

Europe needs a crisis. They broke themselves after the long century of peace enforced by the Anglo-French coalition after the Napoleonic wars, and abdicated their responsibilities to American hegemony while focusing on the pleasant and frivolous.
Now they must stand on their own 2 feet, as globalization unravels, America is going to struggle to rebuild it's independence from China, and the European dream built on international cooperation, American protection, and cheap money evaporates.
