Quote:

Within the data dump a folder called “Japanese Style Faces” can be found. These consist of ASCII expressions designed to represent faces and emotions, commonly used on internet message boards to denote a particular reaction. Some of the faces are listed below.

Some have hypothesized that these emoticons are designed to help CIA hackers infiltrate online communities, posing as normal users of internet message boards in order to collect data or possibly push a particular narrative.

Nate Church, Breitbart’s resident anime expert, spoke briefly about the emoticons saying, “The worst part about these “Japanese style” ASCII expressions, is that they’re not even very good. The majority of Japanese ASCII is meant to mimic the emotional shorthand used in both manga and anime. Any of these would stick out like a sore thumb in the communities for which they’re intended. What the CIA really needs is a dedicated weeb.”

I remember seeing some of these faces on web forums back in the early to mid 2000's After that, mobile phones introduced the masses to the internet and emojis replaced the ASCII expressions in a quick and orderly fashion ( being one of the few to survive this). Besides Japanese people, I haven't seen anyone use them recently so yeah, it does stick out. For 2017, unless this is an old database, this makes the look real out-of-touch.

In all honesty, when I read "Japanese style faces", I thought that glowies were collecting stills from weebshit to use for profile pics so they wouldn't stand out from the rest of the basement dwellers For infiltration purposes that would actually make sense.

I am a queer, trans, working woman, a Marxist-Leninist, a breathless political zealot, and a tired old woman. I am the world's foreleast expert on trans representation in film.

My preferred kinds of films include queer and trans cinema, quiet art films, experimental feminist films, slashers, gialli, 70s exploitation stuff, bright happy movies, 90s teen angst, neon 80s stuff, melodrama, terrible romcoms, LA Rebellion films, cinema from oppressed nations, anti-imperialist films, pro-worker films, films by women, 60s musicals, Spice World, weepies, feelgood women's films, mysteries, and things that look pretty.

I am an organizer with the Workers Voice Socialist Movement. Though the opinions I express here in this blog are a reflection of the political education I receive from that group, my writing has not been reviewed by my comrades and should not be taken to necessarily reflect the views of the group. Instead, understand that this blog is my hobby. I don't hide my politics, and I review and analyze film from the political perspective I share with the Workers Group as best I can, but it is not officially endorsed by the group.

I use content warnings on some of my reviews now, but my older reviews do not have them. Use your discretion.

If we're mutuals or if you're also trans, find me on social media if you want. Frequently Asked Questions: Why did you block me? You insulted me (a sure sign your engagement is not in good faith). You tried to defend a something abhorrent, like genocide, imperialism, pedophilia, r*pe, etc. Or you just outstayed your welcome. While it is the task of any revolutionary to educate the rest of the working class, online discourse has limits. While in the past I have been quicker to block than I am today, I still get frustrated relatively quickly because of the long history of harassment I have experienced on this site and others.

Where did you watch that film? Letterboxd does not allow discussions of those kinds of websites.

How do I know I'm trans? If you have to ask, you probably are.

Explain your rating system. It is largely based on whim and feeling, and I don't have a good explanation for it.

Why don't you talk about the film instead of your personal stories or politics? I do talk about the films I watch. All the time. Sometimes I contextualize them with other information. "Theme" is part of a movie.

But did you like the movie? That's probably discernible from the review, but if you can't figure it out, dig up my rating of it.

Why must you always be political? All art is political. What you think of as apolitical art upholds the status quo, which is, under capitalism, a right-wing hellscape.

Did we watch the same film? Yes. You're either (a) just bad at film analysis or (b) coming from a more boring perspective. Quit asking insufferable, bad-faith questions.
