I mean, there actually are exceptions. Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain, Ergo Proxy, Attack On Titan, The Count of Monte Cristo, Psycho-Pass, are all on the TV show side that have zero ecchi, zero lolis, zero weird sexual shit, zero "anime-y" vibes, and zero superhero capeshit. Plot-wise, the first 3 are character and art-focused than plot-focused, but IMO plot is secondary to art and characters in any storytelling, and historically the most successful stories are character-centric and elucidate the human condition, not have a well-thought but convoluted plot.

Planetes is another TV show that is hard sci-fi about space colonization, and it has none of those except an "anime-y" vibe - you know it when you see it and nearly all anime has it.

On the movie side you every single Ghibli film, Jin-Roh, Akira, Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, The Sky Crawlers, Angel's Egg, Maquia: When the Flowers Bloom, Paprika, and Millennium Actress are all films that have none of that either.

Granted, these are 1 percent of 1 percent. The overwhelming majority of anime has that shit, and worst that's the stuff that anime fans like. But there are exceptions, and if it wasn't for the reputation of the rest of the medium they would probably be acknowledged for their storytelling.

Psycho Pass is very interesting. I cried watching Maquia too. :marseyhappytears: such a good movie I loved how it portrayed motherhood it was a gut punch.

The meme is only wrong in that you have to search really hard for good anime when it's actually really simple. The best anime are those that have reputation of being great outside of weeb communties. They aren't even obscure like Ghibli films, Eva, Bebop and films from guys like Kon, Otomo, Oshii, etc...

But the morons in that thread are recommending shit like Overlord, ReZero, FMA Brotherhood, etc...

Attack On Titan

It's shit. While no ecchi or loli Its over the top gore, edge and the unbearable melodrama are pretty much anime.

FMAB is a good show held back by its anime-isms. It feels an urge to inject random anime bullshit every few minutes that destroys the tone of an otherwise great show.

I tried watching FMAB and couldn't get through the first episode because of its cliche slapstick humor and the anime-y shit. I'm sure it could be enjoyable but I'm as allergic to that as a black guy to sailing.

As a lad, I read the first few chapters of the manga then switched to the anime just in time for :marseychimera:. I rewatched it a few years later and was amazed at how bad things got in some scenes.

Steins;Gate is also a great show (I know it was a VN first but I haven't played it yet) held back by anime-isms, the whole romance between literally me and Kurisu was awkward and very anime.

Trashed the whole series because of that cringe melodrama bullshit, it's so over the top, it's more exaggerated than real life.

I've seen Lain a bunch that one is toeing the line. It's p-do bait, if they omitted the arc of her classmate jerking off to her teacher u could make an argument.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Wtf? I don't remember that arc at all.

Lain was an arthouse fever dream to me. I remember aliens, suicide, a doppleganger, the internet bleeding into the real world, and a whole lot of trippy art. But nothing like that.

Yes, exploring the development of a character's sexuality is totally p-do-bait. Dramatards are really fricking dense.

No Lain's doppelganger appears in Arisu's room and watches her masturbate, i can't remember if it's implicit or u learn after that she was thinking about her teacher. Ruins an otherwise great series

Jump in the discussion.

This comment is full of idiotic lies. Lain's doppelganger does in fact appear in Arisu's room and watches her masturbate. It is made very clear in the series that Lain was thinking about her teacher when she did this. This is just another example of how this person knows nothing about the show and should just watch something else.

  • Doesn't have loli.

  • Doesn't have ecchi.

  • Doesn't have weird anime-y vibes or shoed-in shitty slaptstick humor.

  • Doesn't have any sexual shit or romance.

  • Doesn't have superheroes or generic powers.

  • Plot is a modern interpretation of old European folklore, specifically Norse and Irish mythology, not some soulless modern story with no cultural roots.

It's also one of the few shows - the other being Cowboy Bebop - that manages to attract people who ordinarily would never watch anime, all for the reasons I stated.

There is literally nothing produced as anime that cannot be replicated by watching a normal TV show.

I hope the government makes watching anime a capital crime

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

What normal TV show? Outside of a couple of shows, western TV isn't much better. It doesn't have the sexual degeneracy or the cringey vibe, but it is almost invariably shallow and not adventurous at all in exploring the human condition or conventional morality.

In Japan you have "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" which compares the strengths and weaknesses of democracy and dictatorship. It never does "...but dictatorship BAD" or "democracy is worst government except for all the other ones tried". It was a mature and intellectually honest analysis on government.

The worst of anime is far worse than that of Western TV shows. But the best of anime stands toe to toe with the West's TV shows - and only in merit - there is no equivalent to Legend of the Galactic Heroes, or to Texhnolyze, or to Ergo Proxy, simply because Japan does not place limits on their speech with relation to politics, culture, or the human condition. The West wouldn't dare to be put in a position where the pillars of liberal democracy could be challenged. That's why the West is infatuated with capeshit and thinks Thanos is somehow a compelling character.

I liked the first few episodes but then it slows to an absolute crawl. That series is over a hundred episodes?? They could have done it in 24 and made it much more engaging. Instead its an episodic "Monster of the week" (pun intended).

Don't get me wrong, I like the premise, I like the characters. And I'm not addled with ADHD such that I can't enjoy slow shows, I've watched texhnolyze and lain and both of those are very slow. But monster is both slow and episodic, and that's the worst combo for TV storytelling.
