I know you already mentioned monuments, but I'm going to specifically recommend the Lincoln Memorial, it's awe inspiring.

I roamed around it alone on a hot August late night/ early morning while tripping on acid. Absolutely one of the best days in my life.

See if the peepee monument (washington monument) is letting in people. It's nice to get a view of DC's utterly soulless landscape.

When you go to the Smithsonian, take a long walk around that park to get a feel for things. Plenty of free stuff to do along the way.

Arlington Cemetry is cool, and south of that is the Pentagon, so be sure to take pics! The United States Air Force Memorial will give you some good angles. :marseyveryworriedfed:

The White House ain't shit because you're so far from it, but you might see some morons protesting outside of it. (Do not step over the knee-high chain fence to cross the street).

Georgetown is a nice, quaint neighorbood to walk through.

Oh yah, the MLK Jr. monument is unintentionally funny. The Lincoln monument is cool, but I was glad to pay my respects to the Thomas Jefferson monument.

I liked the International Spy Museum, but it might not be your thing. Always check Groupon for discounts to any of the museums.

Arlington National Cemetery was amazing when I visited it. If you do, the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier is a must see.

Mount Vernon is really cool. Of the monuments, Jefferson's and Lincoln's are the coolest.
