the mostly male characters became more vulnerable, empathetic and comfortable being themselves with other men.

is it just me or is everyone mixing up empathy and sympathy nowadays

I wonder if the actual meaning is to push the idea that if you understand someone then you must agree with them aka acknowledging their lived experience tier stuff. To discourage 'I understand you but you're wrong' by just using the same definition for empathy and sympathy

It's honestly a toss-up because, while these people are incredibly r-slurred and may not understand nuance, they would do ANYTHING to absolve themselves from responsibility and self-reflection

Empathy is to put yourself into other people’s shoes, is a very useful and respectful trait.

Having β€œsympathy” is just to feel sorry.

Redditors mistake empathy with being overly emotional and melodramatic. They don’t understand one can empathize with people without breaking down into tears. They also don’t understand that one can cry a river without feeling any empathy at all, that’s a very common tactic employed by narcissists and other manipulative persons.

vulnerable

That’s an undesirable trait for anyone, not just men, but women as well. I don’t understand why anyone would like to be β€œvulnerable” and feel like that’s a good thing.

The world of Ted Lasso is only a fantasy because we chose to allow it to be. We can make different choices. I'm working on making different choices within myself, with my wife, my son, and my friends. It's hard work and our culture pushes back but we can change the expectations for men in our communities.

Those are the funniest kind of menslibbers because almost all of them are unironically super patriarchal except they force progressive ideals upon their family instead of conservative ones so that makes it suddenly okay.

how could anyone watch that show and think any of the dialogue from men was real and not from liberal white foids?

Unironically true and an underrated aspect redditoids fail to consider. Doesn’t have to be a lot of them, just having a couple of good male friends to hangout and talk is great for one’s mental health self esteem. There is nothing wrong with befriending women, but if you only socialize with women you’ll get a twisted view of what being a man means, not to mention getting terrible dating advice.

It's alright, but it features a lot of that aw-shucks-look-how-nice fake pathos that modern millenials like in their shows to make up for the fact that they're deeply unliked and unlikeable people surrounded by more of the same in their real lives.

Some of the time it works well but it gets pretty saccharine and annoying sometimes. Granted I've only watched the first season, idk if it gets better or worse after that.

There was the episode where they called a female politician a Nazi for being anti immigration. It literally had nothing to do with the show, so weird.

First season was kind of good. Season 3 was darn awful, looked like it was scripted by reddit. Filled with β€œle current year” issues and too much focus on Rebecca and Keeley, Ted barely appears.

It's okay, I liked up up until the latter half of season one before the white woman snark really bled through. I can still watch it but you have to remember that anyone with a set of balls isn't the target audience.

I think it’s legitimately good but it has some cringe spots. Definitely a great show to watch with white women.

Taking my cue from the thread - watch Detectorists instead. A perfect representation of a friendship between two men (as well as of a relationship between a husband and wife and, later, father and daughter.).

Ted 1 was good but Ted 2 started lecturing me in episode 2. Detectorists would never do that. :marseydisagree:

Season 3 was terrible. Season 1 was a light hearted feel good show with some funny moments. Then it felt like the screenwriters were all women, a footballer chimps out for being called a cute twink and said and I quote β€œTHAT GUY SAID SOMETHING VERY IGNORANT” :soycry: followed by β€œHe said the F word”

All the weird social issue of the week episodes were bad, but the worst part was how they glossed over the dude's wife shacking up with the marriage counselor. I almost wondered if they were going to radical centrize and dip into the failures of too soft masculinity, but the dude's moment is he's up front in saying, "Shucks. That really hurts me." Not, "You lied to me this whole time and I don't want that unethical and duplicitous frick around my son. I'm calling whatever psych board society whatever and getting his license revoked." And all his friends supported the "aw shucks" option.

Good take, Ted is a passive figure, the ideal feminist man.

And all his friends supported the "aw shucks" option.

Another dramacel in this thread pointed out that redditors can’t tell the difference between empathy and sympathy, and this is the perfect example. You should be angry if your wife banged your couple therapist, and actual friends should be pissed along, instead they are just all β€œI’m so sorry, that’s sad”. Empathy is not about pity, is about comforting and standing up for your loved one’s.
