Why would they not? Apollo doesn’t benefit Reddit in any way. It’s just a massive drain on their resources. It doesn’t serve their ads and it hammers them with requests.

Even when you frame it like that, it still doesn't make sense, because reddit obviously knows that Apollo users will just switch to the official reddit app.

It's just stupid reasoning all around. I can only assume he's being purposefully ignorant towards them to try and get them to admit that their end goal is to just shut down all third party apps, but the way he's going about doing it is stupid. He should be more direct, asking specifically if they view his app as an asset that brings people to reddit, or if they view his app as a threat that needs to be shut down. Because if they lie to him and say they view it as an asset, he can directly attack them for acting against (what they claim to be) their own self interests by shutting the app down and not offering an affordable price.

Reddit has an app, and it comes with ads that make them money. They're killing all other apps, for free, by enacting this policy. They don't need to buy him out.

Virtually no one is willing too pay. Apple users are still more willing too pay than Android though. Apple has about half the global install base of Google Play devices, but the App Store still consistently generates more than double the Play Store's revenue, it's been thatbway since the figures started being compared over a decade ago.

Reddit will still make more money from the influx of users seeing ads, but Apollo being iOS based means that a higher percentage may pony some money up.

That's clear to everyone now. The part that's scummy on reddit is that they lied about their intentions and then slandered the dev. If they came out and stated they wanted to kill Apollo, they'd have way less blowback if they just said it straight up.

I think he had opportunity. After all, he got them on the phone. He had their attention and an opportunity to pitch something. But he's saying he'll stop hitting their API for $10 million. That's just dumb.

I would have approached it with an offer to help integrate the tools into the official app. Work as an consultant and do a contract for a year or whatever length of time. They could still say no or maybe they come back with another offer. idk. Just musing really.
