Well what's your excuse then? Here it's common decency that if you invite someone over, you will feed them and don't expect anyone to bring their own snacks.
(Also seriousposting, but as much as I hate unironic commies burgers have no idea about EE either. Hungary never actually had breadlines, by the 70s obesity was an epidemic and I was born long after '89 anyways. The system was shit but it was only really bad in the Soviet Union and the ruskies deserved it anyways)

It's not about having people feed themselves. Our house always had more than enough food or snacks. It's just a cultural thing to bring something over to your friend's house when you're young (at least where I'm from.) Kinda like bringing a bottle of wine to a dinner party. It's not that your hosts don't have wine of their own. Humans have bonded socially over food for ages. Potlucks aren't done because people don't have enough food to make a complete meal. It's not hard to understand.
